Premiere Pro CC Nested Sequence Reverse Speed Makes Black Footage

So... I have had this problem on three separate projects over the last few months.

2 of the projects were using video files and 1 of the projects used an image sequence. So type of footage does not appear to be an issue.

The issue is the same regardless. The issue below is happening using a DSLR 1080p30 sequence. I have tested this in other sequences such as AVCHD 1080p30 and HDV 1080P30. The issue does not occur on other 1080p30 sequences. It seems to be an issue with the DSLR sequence only.

Create a sequence-> place footage or images in that sequence -> make any needed edits, effects, etc. -> Place the first sequence into a new sequence (this sequence plays back fine) ->copy that sequence or nest the sequence from the project files list a second time -> right click->select "Speed/Duration"-> Click "Reverse Speed"-> Click ok.

This process should give you one nested sequence that plays forwards and one that plays backwards.

The issue that has happened repeatedly over the last few months is that the reversed sequence turns to black footage. If I expand the track the footage still shows up as a thumbnail. Also, the sequence maintains its time. The entire sequence turns black from start to finish.

This is possibly similar to the previous fixed multicam nested sequence issue but is new as of CC 14.2.

Any suggestions outside of not using that sequence type would be appreciated. Also, hopefully Adobe sees this and can verify if there is in fact an update issue that has caused this specific issue.

One more thing, I've found a temp workaround that doesn't mean I have to export intermediate files to reverse.

For my workflow - which is make loops first forward motion then reverse motion

I make my (forward motion) selects with the nested sequence, then I click on the nest and make a 'sub sequence' - I can then bring the sub sequence in and reverse. No black video. Yay, kinda. Now can Adobe fix it so it just does what you'd expect?

Just open a seperate premier pro project and reverse the clips you want to reverse, without adding any extras, output the video file, and then insert the new file reversed already into your clip should sort the issue

I have same problem and I want to share it with video hope you guys have any solution for it .

Because I want to render my video with GPU not Sofware. Sofware really slowly rendering than GPU.

Here is video watch it please

Hi Enlprck, deselecting the GPU rendering fixed my problem too. In my case it was a short sequence, so this is an acceptable workaround. It would not be suitable for longer complex sequence. Thanks for sharing.

I want to pop in to say that I am working a project on a fully updated PC version 12.0 Build 224, and I too get this problem.  I often pull in bits and pieces to reverse from all points in my bins, because of lack of coverage--one second here, two seconds there--and for the life of me I don't understand why Adobe, after 2 1/2 years of notice, wouldn't have fixed this so we could grab and go by now.

I think this might be something affecting very few users ... it's certainly not a common issue on this forum. Still, please file the bug report, as those are distributed in a collated form to all managerial types.

I will, but if it is "Uncommon" why would it happen to more than a dozen users, in almost as many scenarios?  And work-arounds be darned, isn't the point to just be able to grab-n-go?

BTW, I have tried several of the work-arounds and I can't fix it. I am having an inexplicable black screen when trying to reverse one clip, whereas in the exact same sequence I was able to reverse another (from the same group of footage) just fine.

Very glad to find this workaround, Thank you! Though it did crash right after this. I hope it wasn't the cause.

NOT HAPPY to see the dates on this thread. WTF Adobe?? This has been a noted problem since 2015?? Why hasn't this been addressed???

I have the same problem as the user cgmarriott, could anyone help us?

Argh. 2 years later, same reversing nested comp style project, and the bug is still there.

Has everyone Feature Request/Bug Report Form this problem?

I'm going to send them a video of the bug in action.

Before placing files in Premier Pro do one thing

In Explorer order the image sequence as per the date of modified or created. And after that you drag same sequence into Premiere Pro.

You have the reversed sequence automatically.

I have a similar problem, my reversed nested sequence will play normally, until I put a title over it, then wherever the title is over it'll make the video black, as well as all footage before the title. My last project it only made it black over the title and not footage before the title. It's definitely causing wasted time figuring out how to work around this problem!

Same issue but it appears to be PC only. Nested sequence that has reverse time added shows as black video. I added this effect on my MAC at home with no issues. Then, when transferring to office PC, the footage is not displaying properly. I updated to latest version of Premiere Pro CC 2015.2 9.2.0 (41) but the issue is not resolved. What the heck?!?

Not just PC only, I'm having the issue on my Mac too. Not even a nested sequence, just copy and pasted a clip, clicked reverse, and then the reversed clip shows up as black video.

I'm having the same problem. But I noticed it only started happening after a while. To be exact, it started going black after I added any layers over these reversed sequences. If I turn off visibility for any layer directly above the reversed sequences, it plays fine again.

I'm having the same issue repeatedly.

I've nested all my text animated sequences, put them in the timeline, then cut and paste on the backside and check reverse speed only to end up with nothing. Actually it works the first time but when I duplicate the project, they all go black. It's extremely frustration because I have about 50 of these in a video I'm making. It's created hours more work for us and the client is pissed. Hey Adobe care to pay for all this extra work?
