Timeline choppy in premiere pro 25.1 and previously suggested fixes not working

Hi All,

I have an issue in premiere Pro 25.1  where the timeline playback is choppy to the point of only updating every 5 -10 seconds which is making editing somewhat challenging.... This only happens when the timeline is docked and is fine when the window is floating.

System specs:

Premiere Pro 25.1

WIndows 11 pro 24H2

Amd 5950x CPU

RTX 3090 GPU

128Gb RAM

All NVME based storage

I've tried the fixes noted in the post below, none of which have solved the issue.

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/premiere-2025-choppy-timeline-playhead/td-p/14924290

Having spent half a day trying to fix this, including installing latest Studio Nvidia driver and the two older versions mentioned in the post above, each time using DDU to cleanly remove the previous driver and it hasn't helped. In each case I also reset preferences and deleted cache etc.

The footage is h264, i tried recoding to prores yet issue is the same.

I'm now editing in 24.6.4 and all is fine...

Any suggestions on how to fix Prem 25.1?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response Jamie, I've copied your questions and put my answers below.

What GPU driver are you using?

-Currently on 566.36 (Latest) Studio but also tried 560.81 and 556.12 with no improvement

Can you check your audio hardware settings and make sure Default Input is set to "No Input"

-It wasn't but is now and didn't seem to make any difference

Can you hold down "SHIFT" while launching Premiere and check the boxes
"Reset Plugin Cache"
"Disable third-party plugins (one time only)"
"Clear media cache files"

-I did this each time I tried different drivers. Have done again and doesn't fix the issue

Can you right click on one of your files that won't play and send a screenshot of the media file properties.

-Files are playing fine, thats never been the issue just that the timeline playhead stalls, it's playing fine in the Program panel including the Program  panel timeline playhead working smoothly.  I have taken screenshots which I will upload. All these files are all working perfectly in 24.6.4. and have been dealt with in the same way.

Can you right click and select Modify > Interpret footage and send a screenshot of those settings as well.

-Will do

Hi Rach,

Many thanks for the response. I haven't tried it in 25, This is the first project I've tried to do on the 2025 version of Premiere pro. I may try that a little later once I've got some work done.

This happens even after just dragging a single clip into a new sequence and hitting play. No adjustment layers, effects, titles.... etc etc. And as mentioned if I undock the timeline its fine.

The footage is 1080p h264 59.94. As mentioned I have also transcoded and tried as 1080 prores 422 with the same issue. I don't think its footage specific. It just generally feels very clunky and unresponsive. Playback start stop for instance is also very slow.

I appreciate there is more information I probably shoud have provided for a proper bug report, but given I'm a little behind today I'm having to concentrate on that for now.

I''ll investigate further later.

HI @MikeDy ,

Thanks for the message. Welcome to the forums.

We’re happy you’ve reached out.  We’ll need a bit more info to try and help with your issue.

I see you rolled back to 24.6 and I'm glad you have that as a workaround.  I'm curious if the issue also happens in 25.0.

I'm also curious if you are using any adjustment layers.

Please see; How do I write a bug report?

I hope we can help you soon.
