Upgrading RH2017 project to RH2020 fails

Looks like I'm having about the same problem as PMCDEV (see post Project upgraded from RH9 to RH2020 missing all to... - Adobe Support Community - 12121403).
In my case it concerns an upgrade of a RH2017 project to RH2020. In our project we have several folders  containing the topics. Only part of these folders are carried over to RH2020 when upgrading the project. The upgrade stops within a minute with the following message: "The application has run into an error. Please save your unsaved changes and restart from menu: Help > Restart RoboHelp". Restarting does not solve the problem.

As a result of the solutions offered to PMCDEV I tried to fix the .fpj's with a script. This doesn't help.  I don't know much about fpj files and don't know what to look for to see if they are ok. Can someone help me with my issue?

Open one of the sample projects in 2017 and in each folder you will find an FPJ file. It should show the sub-folders in a specific structure. What is likely wrong with your Classic project is that somewhere in the structure an FPJ file is not showing all the sub-folders.

The upgrade relies on that so wrong content or structure equals failed upgrade.

Take a look and try again.

With all that said, I am not certain it is the same problem as you wouldn't see the Application has run into an error message if that is all it was. I think I would first try upgrading one of the sample projects. If that gets the same response then it is not your project but an installation issue.

If that's the case, was RoboHelp installed with admin rights? If not uninstall and reinstall again with admin rights and make sure you have Update 5 applied. If the sample upgrades then look at those FPJs.

Let us know how it goes.

I went through the steps you described Peter. I already had other projects that were properly upgraded (I couldn't open the sample projects in RH2017 though). I've installed update 5 now and I think that's the solution. The project with the subfolders now seems to have been converted correctly (no more error message either). I still have to check if it's really all right, but I'm a lot happier already. Thank you!
