Adobe PDF / Scroll bars still missing

I've looked at all the posts and their answers. It's very frustrating. I've done all the suggestions. Still no scrollbar. If I adjust the page size manually -- pull it in or out -- the bars appear for a few seconds then disappear. I can't grab them.

I cannot scroll up/down or side to side. Mac Ventura. Acrobat Pro version 2023.006.20320

Any other ideas or will there be an update to fix?

Correct answer J. M. S.

Hi J.M.S.

Thanks for explaining about Zoom to page level. It's not something I ever use –I do View > Zoom > Fit height if I want to see a page fitting the window. However, I've just had a go at using Zoom to page level.

In order not to show any pre-published confidential material, I created a  new blank PDF page and, as you say, selecting Zoom to page level, there's NO scrollbar.

However, it dawned on me that if there's only one page in the doc and we're viewing at page level, there's nowhere to scroll to ... and maybe that's what the developers thought ...

... so I tried adding a second blank page and immediately the scroll bar appeared (see attached – this time with more helpful file names).

I then had another thought and deleted my extra page again so I just had a 1-page doc. Viewed at Fit Height or Zoom to page level, it tells me it's showing at 59.8% and there's NO scrollbar (see attached).

However, if  I increase the percentage size to 75% so now not all the page is visible, the scrollbar appears.

I don't know if this helps and sorry that I'll need to press on with work, so I can't reply for now, but fingers firmly crossed.

Thanks for the work you did with this.

The thing is, when I view a document like your 2-page doc, I don't have the scroll bar. But I guess this is because you have continuous scrolling enabled, and not single page view.

Version 2024 005.20400 and no scroll bars. This is absurd.

If you have tried Frans v.d. Geest's "Correct Answer" above and it is still not working, I suggest trying the following. Even if it is not a true "Single Page View", it finally lets you grab and drag a scroll bar when on any page:
(1)  Go to "Accessibility" in Preferences.

(2)  Go to "Override Page Display" and turn on "Always use Page Layout Style".

(3)  Then choose "Single Page Continuous" from the dropdown.

(4) Changes will not apply to already open documents, but after you close and reopen or start a new document, you will see the GRABABLE scroll bar where it always was in the glorious days of yore... See the screenshots below.

(With thanks to the people at CreativePro Magazine. If you don't subscribe, you really, really should...)

If you're having trouble seeing comments in Acrobat, it could be due to a software glitch or version issue. On the other hand, if you want to boost your iPhone’s photo editing capabilities, try Remini For Android . This app leverages AI to effortlessly enhance your images. Any suggestions for fixing Acrobat comment visibility problems?

I don't use Acrobat on an iphone. I use it on a desktop like normal people. I know this whole scroll bar issue was to cater to iphone and mobile users, but by doing so, it alienated those of use who use it daily and have deadlines. I use a Wacom pen and scroll bars are the only way I navigate my apps. Without scroll bars, it is like driving a car without a steering wheel.

Is that it? I wondered what possible justification there could be for deleting the scroll bars. But even on a phone wouldn't it be necessary to move around a page?

Any news on this?

I'm on version 2024.002.20857 now and nothing has changed.

Amal, please tell me that you're joking? This scroll bar issue is now over a year old and clearly your users are not happy with the changes. How hard is it just to go back to live, permanent, always showing scroll bars???

So now other threads on the same topic were integrated in this one, I think this reduces the visibility of the still existing problems with the scroll bars, since this thread is marked as solved

Hi @J. M. S.

Hope you are doing well and sorry to hear that.

Have you tried the steps shared above in the correct answer? What happens when you try to use the scroll bar, do you get any error message? A small video recording of the steps and the issue would be very helpful.

What is the version of the OS and the Acrobat DC you are using? To check the version go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure you have the recent version 24.02.20687 installed. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

Let us know how it goes.

So, Amal, on the off-chance that Adobe has restored the scroll bars in the very latest version, do we take it that it comes down to what age your device is and, therefore, what system you can run, so those of us who, for whatever reason, have to run older Macs, and therefore older systems (in my case Big Sur), will simply always be locked out...?  As we are for the latest updates to InDesign and more, and indeed, this is understandable, except for the critical fact that always active scroll bars are an utterly essential feature to our workload. Adobe adding and upgrading apps is the normal thing to do, but deliberately eliminating a vital feature for its users is utterly bewildering.

The new Acrobat Reader Vers. 2024.0002.20687 still is a big frustration - the scroll bar still goes missing - this problem was already complained about in Sept last year -- Acrobats' developers even commented they know about it .... nothing happening to resolves the issue ----.

I'm very grateful that the missing scroll bar issue was fixed, but I'm still having a problem. Although the scroll bar stays present in most contexts, it does not if I'm in "single-page display, zoom to page level" -- in other words, when I press command-0. While I can still maneuver by using page-down and the scroll wheel, what is most natural to me is to click on the scroll bar. Is it something I'm doing wrong, or it is a feature rather than a bug?

I have reported this several times, but no one seems to care. To me, it is clearly a bug.

What is also strange, when I zoom in a little from the full page view, the scroll bar appears, but only for the current page, not for the entire document. Handling documents with several hundred pages has become very difficult and inconvenient for me.

Thanks, J.M.S. At least now I know I just have to keep on using the old 2022.001.20112 version with all the muscle-memory elements intact, INCLUDING all the scroll bars, even if I have to click "Cancel" every time I close a PDF and it asks me to Upgrade...!
