Hi

I am using (or TRYING to use!) Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.
But every time it loads up I receive the following pop-up message:

"A serious error has been detected and Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional cannot continue. Please re-install the application and try again."

I click OK, and then another message appears:
"Acrobat.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x05bf1243" referenced memory at "0x12284e88". The memory could not be "written".
Click on OK to terminate the program"

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing but the error comes back!
What can I do?? Can ANYONE help?!!

Acrobat 8.0 Pro on WinXP
The error message that was originally posted is still a problem fter the following:
Removed Reader version 8.0 and Pro version 8. all references in the registry for adobe. After re-loading just Pro 8.0 I made sure the FlexLic Service was running and applied the fixes posted in this forum that applied. Some of the fixes didn't apply as I don't
have the "suite". There is one recomended fix that I did not try, the reload of the OS. Since I cannot accomplish that right now I find myself at a loss for words and action. I do not however, ever see the activation screen that has been mentioned. I am installing
with admin rights and running the program as such. Perhaps I missed something but has anyone actually run into the same problems I have with Acrobat 8.0 Pro.?

Is it possible to uninstall the 8.1 update?

News - It works.

In desperation after trying every conceivable 'fix' on the forum and multiple uninstall -reinsalls, admin installs, disabling all services etc i have giot it running.

I asked our IT department to do a clean re-build of my XP image, this comes in with just XP and MSOffice, plus the usual network bloatware for asset monitoring, remote desktop and the BlackICE firewall etc.

I then asked them to install Acroabat before installing any other apps, they were able to install as Admin and Activate first time!!

The apps that I have not installed yet are HP scanner 8250 suite ReadIris Pro, HP scan etc), PGP Universal, Paintshop Pro, Access and Project, and my PCMCIA 3G/GPRS network card.

My suspicion is that one of these Apps does something that prevents the correct route to activation, prime contentder is PGP but I can't prove it and I am not going to try!

This might not help anyone else, but if you work in a corporate environment, where imaging is not unknown, then I would reccomend a re-build and install Acrobat as first app after re-build.

I tried something today, that once again points to the flex license manager - I installed 8.1, then the 8.1.1 update - rebooting each time and then before launching, changed the license service to run as my administrator account instead of the local account.

The software launched and didn't display the anomalies that were previously experienced. But, things were not working 100% either and various menu items froze. Interestingly enough, the service reverted back to the local account after a new user launched the software.

I tried several user accounts to launch the software and it either froze or crashed (closed out with no error messages displayed)

I realize software piracy is a serious deal, but come on now. I purchased this software in July 07 and this still doesn't work.

I've read most of the posts in this thread RIGHT after I ordered Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional from Office Depot [so I'm assuming that I should have a valid serial number for verification purposes]. I've had the software since 11/19/07, but have hesitated installing because I wanted to be sure I did a full data backup before installing.

My desktop is XP Pro [completely rebuilt less than 3 months ago after a hard drive crash] and my laptop is Vista Ultimate. I want to first load on Vista Ultimate, but am not sure if I will encounter issues like many of the posters here have shared. I pretty much "get" that I will need to download the patch after installing to Vista.

Are there any other "recommendations" before I proceed? I really do NOT want to "rebuild" any computer since I've already had that pleasure not too long ago.

I'd like to install secondly to my XP Pro -- are those bugs worked out already?

Any suggestions on best practices are welcomed! Thanks.

Acrobat 8.0 started working on my computer after I uninstalled Windows Mobile Device Center 6.0. Acrobat then activated. I installed the 8.1 update and Acrobat still works. There are some minor quirks, including that under the HELP --> ACTIVATION drop-down menu both "activate" and "deactivate" are greyed out.

Blue 2000, I am a Vista user and was one of the early people with problems in this forum. My problem was fixed with direct assistance from Adobe engineers, and that work led to the recent patch. However, in the midst of my several month issue with Acrobat 8/8.1, I tried installing it on an XP machine, and it worked fine for a couple of days, then had the same issue as described above. I tried all of the fixes posted on the www (Adobe and elsewhere, even calling Dell and Microsoft for assistance) over a period of weeks, to no avail. I tried other PDF software, but it was pitiful by comparison. Since the XP machine's data was not as dear to me as the Vista machine's, I did do a clean re-build of XP, fully updated, and then Acrobat, fully updated, and it did work consistently until I uninstalled/deactivated in order to put Acrobat back on my Vista machine... a drastic measure, to be sure, but one that worked.

For what it is worth, though I never fully understood what caused the problem, but on both machines (Vista and XP), the issue with Acrobat arose shortly after windows updates. I do recall the engineer stating that the issue had something to do with "virtualization," but I am unsure whether that issue would arise with similar results in both (Vista and XP) environments and his comment was with regard to Vista.

I never get the chance to see whether they change, the application stops responding long before. I read on one post that it can take up to 2 minutes for Acrobat to establish a connection in order to activate...not good if it crashes in 15 seconds!!

I have now tried a few of the suggestions on Kb401043, which is realted to this issue.

I have created a local admin account, re-installed Acrobat 8 - no change - crashes after 15 seconds.

I have ensured that all non microsoft services are disabled and startup items disabled, repaired installation - no change, crashes after 15 seconds.

I have used MSconfig to confirm that Full control is on the flexnet directory - it was

I have used the CMD prompt to try solution 8 and ensure the FLEXnet directory has proper permissions - no change.

I can't get Acrobat 8 to work in XP and have now exhausted all posts for fixes, apart from a clean re-build, but can't see how this will help when I tried the new local admin account.

Any ideas anyone
