Sign In Required - unable to validate serial number

Hi all,

I had a free trial version of Adobe Acrobat. I then bought Adobe Acrobat Pro standalone offline version. After installing it, I got the message 'sign in required' then when I clicked on the button, it said unable to validate serial number. For the first few days, every time I chose 'quit', I was able to open pdfs and continue regardless, but today, it wouldn't open any pdf and just kept opening the 'sign in' window.

I've already tried contacting Adobe help. Their first suggestion was to take control of my computer and sort it out remotely. I obviously refused. Their next suggestion was to uninstall the software and reinstall and delete a line from the hostfile. I did that, but it didn't work.

I tried to cancel the free trial version I had, but there is no option to cancel in my account, and the helpdesk said I didn't have any subscriptions, so I don't know what else to do. I can't find an email address to write to send screenshots of my account which shows I've bought the product.

Any other suggestions please??

The free trial is the subscription product. You must fully uninstall it before installing the non-subscription product. If in doubt where you are please post the exact version you currently have.

Hi Helena,

Which exact version of Acrobat did you purchase a license for?

  • Acrobat > About (Mac)
  • Help > About (Windows)

Where and when did you purchase it?

Hi Jane,

I bought Acrobat Pro 2017 (version 11) for PC.

After a long-winded discussion with the help desk today, they had me deactivate my anti-virus (didn't help), then find the hosts file and delete all strings that didn't start with #. This worked, but I don't know if I will need to do this again the next time I turn on my computer and try to open a pdf file. A couple of weeks ago when I tried sorting this problem out, they had suggested deleting 1 specific string in the host file, which I did, but it didn't change anything. At the time, I could still open pdfs by clicking 'quit' after the validation error, but today, it wouldn't let me open files at all. Fingers crossed this is a permanant solution. Thanks for your time.

Hi Helena,

If you purchased from Adobe, then it should show up when you log into your account. I’m glad it’s working now, and keep us posted here as to whether it continues to work.
