InDesign + OS X Mavericks = Slooow?

Since updating, I don't know what is going on, but I'm experiencing awfully slow performance from InDesign.

I have a MBP Retina 15 Inch 2.3Ghz, 16Gb Ram. Put it this way, I've never, ever experienced that slow feeling on this thing. Never. And suddenly after installing Mavericks, I'm experiencing that slow motion feeling.

Is it just me, or is anyone else getting this?

Correct answer BDinkar

there have been two updates in January, none of them addressed the "performace" nor the "preferences" corruption issue

my issues:

  • obviously SLOOOOWWWWW
  • ID interface reverts to dark grey (which i hate)
  • the Control pane has to be open at all times, if you close ID will creash on quit (confirmed by Adobe tech support)

An update for InDesign CC (9.2) is now live and is available via the creative cloud installer. This update resolves several performance problems. In addition, the update includes epub enhancements, Typekit Desktop Font Integration and Hyperlink simplification. Please give it a try.

I had some success by turning of anti-aliasing in the "Display Performance" options of the ID preferences.  I had to close and re-open the current file after doing that though.  Not sure if that's enough of a permanent fix, since it makes the type and imagery look jagged (naturally), but enough to keep you working.

After a long time, the issue was solved more or less (Indd CC working still much slower than CS6, but almost acceptable), when the 2014-version came along and everything slowed down again. I can count to 30, watching my mouse moving from one side of the screen to the other when working with Indd CC 2014. Good job there, Adobe! Now fix it.

I just had to update to CC for a big client I am currently working with. I am hating every long minute I am spending in this program - when will they be fixing this? Productivity has been soo slow and very painful - I have followed the recommendations but I am not having any luck. This is killing my bottom line and adding extra stress to an already high deadline driven project. What the heck is Adobe thinking? Why have none of the updates addressed this issue? Why I am I paying monthly to be stressed out and at risk of jepordizing a great opportunity. FIX PLEASE!

Hello KbIDG,

Please let us know the InDesign version you are working on. We have made performance improvements in ID 9.2( 9.2.0.69). If you still finding things slow in this version, let us know what all things you are still finding slow.

Thanks,

Dinkar

I am using 9.2. I have Maverick. I am still am experiencing issues on

redraw, when moving text boxes, general overall sluggishness. I try to keep

the palettes I have open to a minimum, but since I am working on a magazine

layout I need several open from time to time. I do have indesign open

almost constantly while I am working as it is the main program I use. My

husband is also using the 9.2 and Maverick and is still experiencing the

same issues as me as are two other colleagues. Please advise.

Just posting what I found to see if it helps anyone. I found the slow down is happening when I have all my indesign panels (Effect, character, swatches and so on) completely open on my screen (thinking it saves time from having to open them from icon view or icon with the name of the panel next to it.) The slow down happen even before the Maverick update. I just noticed it more after updating to Maverick. The minute I collapsed all my panels down to icon view, I immediately noticed an increase to performance. It's worth a try, just not sure why there is not the same problem with Photoshop or Illustrator.

Just installed the new InDesign CC update. Is this going to fix things?

I don't think there has been a new IDCC update. What version are you running?

InDesign CC is running versy slow. I have found that it has to do with the palettes being open -- swatches, type, pages, etc. When I close the palettes it runs much better. This is clearly a bug. Adove, please address this. I am locked into a year-long subscription and don't want to go back to using CS6.

Closing palettes, removing thumbnails or changing anything within the palettes themselves doesn't seem to help me.  Doesn't even seem to matter what kind of document I have open, whether it be a complex or a simple one.  Once I restart InDesign, it speeds up.

I have noticed, however, that exporting the file to an idml file then reopening it seems to help speed things up.  Perhaps it is something associated with converting CS6 files to CC??  I can't recall if the speed was affected on a new document vs. an opening an existing document??

I flicked back to CS6 for a test run, which runs great, except I still get the hanging app, force quit scenario...

So, back to CC to play around some more.

I am finding that on my current setup I am experiencing the biggest lag issues when I have the Swatches panel open!

I can select text, hand tool around the pages, etc pretty good with it closed, as soon as I open it to colour some text or graphic element, instant performance hit!

New doc, old doc converted, export to IDML makes no difference for me. Thankfully just a single keystroke to close the Swatches panel allows me to make some headway with my workflow...

My INDD CC was running super slow until I updated to Extensis Suitcase Version 16.0.4 that apparently had fixes for mavericks. It's running fast now.

Thought I'd throw in my experience with Suitcase! I also upgraded to 16.0.4, made no difference at all. Still terrible. InDesign CS6 has really saved the day for me right now.

Just to give my experience....

27" iMac 3.4GHz i7, 16GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB graphics. Running Mavericks (10.9). Apps & OS installed on SSD.

InDesign CC runs HORRIBLY. Scrolling very slow. Tried all the suggestions, deleting prefs, tabbing windows quitting and restarting, page thumbnails off, etc etc etc etc etc. Nothing makes a blind bit of difference. Selecting the most simple of objects results in small delays with every click. Selecting text is really frustrating and incredibly slow. Display is set to typical and makes no difference.

I downloaded CS6 from the cloud due to the unnacceptable loss of productivity and it runs like a dream. The very same documents (that I saved from CC as IDML files) and then worked on in CS6 now scroll quickly and text and objects are selected and moved instantly when I click.

I can see there is a lot of frustration on these forums, and I am simply a designer trying (and struggling with CC) to get jobs done. Workflow has slowed without question using InDesign CC and I am now able to work at a much more acceptable rate with CS6. This is an issue that really does need fixing asap.

I understand that there are all manner of platforms and hardware specs to deal with, but to be running a one year old top of the line iMac with plenty of RAM that runs everything else sweet as a nut, I do think this is unnacceptable.

That's my experience anyhow!

I have even worked with Extensis off and it still runs slow -- So far I have gone back to having the palletes hidden, turned off font preview, turned off SYNC and turned off tool tips.

running suitcase 5 16.0.2

seems to be working smoother -- but really need my windows open.

Oh, and the reason I jumped on the update so quick, is because Adboe realesed the programs that were having troubled did include InDesign CC etc., plus some of the OS updates are helpful in my workflow --

I'm running this on 2011/12 iMAC 3.4 GHz intel i7 with 16 gigs of ram and 2 additional monitors connnected by thunderbolt.

My machine specs are :Intel Core i7 - 9700F CPU @ 3.00 GHZ 8 core 64 GB of ram 64 bit operating system NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 with 164 MB memory Monitor is BenQ PD3200U 4K UHD - hooked up via HDMIandMac mini (M1, 2020) - 16GB Ram - 2TB SSD

Have you tried disconnecting the additional monitors. A few people have

reported that speeds things up.

Not saying it's a solution, just curious if helps.

InDesign CC is so slow for me too! I just updated the software tonight. No improvement in performance. I am running Mavericks. I created a new profile on my computer and started working on a new InDesign document. Within a few minutes it would start to run slow again. Adobe, do you know this is happening?

I really have no choice anymore. InDesign is basically the only option available for desktop publishing these days. I trust a fix is in order? I am running a 2012 iMac, 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB of RAM. Before Mavericks it was working fine without any performance issues.

This is a Halloween trick isn't it.
