Could someone please explain what this error message means? I'm trying to do a fly through text effect and used basic 3D from a tutorial and this error message shows up every time I try to preview the clip.

Can you please share your workflow, screenshots or a video and your system specs ?
did you apply any other effects other than basic 3D ?
What are your sequence settings ?
Need more info to be able to help you out

I used an adjustment layer above that had Red Giant's VHS effect and the basic 3D was for a fly through effect.

Okay so you were working with 'Distance To Image' trying to achieve this,
I would recommend you scale using 'Motion' or drop a 'Transform' effect
to do the scaling, and leave your Basic 3D for 'Swivel' and 'Tilt', I tried it
and scaled the text as much as I can without that buffer error...
Another way is to also apply the swivel or tilt in basic 3D, nest your video
then apply scaling to create the fly through, better create your text in
a high res sequence so that you do not loose quality upon scaling

So I ended up just exporting the text with the 3D basic effect by itself and then imported it back into the project, but now when I try to use a track matte to have the white text show the video it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?

when you exported your text, you loose lot of quality if you want to make scaling to create the fly through,
please go back and create your animation as I explained, forget about the exported text, after creating
the basic 3D and the fly through using 'Scale' property in 'Motion' in the 'Effect Controls' panel, nest your
text, put it above the video you want to appear inside the text, apply track matte to the video and choose
the video track where the text is from the 'track matte' parameters in the effect controls panel.
