Hey there,
My subscription for adobe effects renewed automatically after one year. I thought that after the one year term I'll be able to cancel at any time. It turns out I have to pay penalties now to cancel the subscription. This can't be right.
What the subscription terms say is that after the first year, you don't have to renew the subscription. Unfortunately, that means you have to remember to CANCEL it in its last month, because otherwise it auto-renews. And yes, Adobe will charge a cancellation fee if you try to cancel after renewal.

the contract terms have changed over time. there was a time when you could cancel an annual contract, at any time after renewal, without penalty exactly as you stated.
however, that's no longer what i see, https://www.adobe.com/legal/subscription-terms.html
in any case, contact adobe support per @LinSims and let them know when you subscribed, you understood cancellation after the initial year to be allowed at any time without penalty. please let use know the outcome.
