Adobe, a software giant renowned for its creative suite, has been a beacon in the digital landscape for years. However, beneath the glossy surface lies a labyrinth of complaints, particularly centered around their cancellation policies. This article aims to shed light on some of the most common grievances users face when attempting to terminate their Adobe subscriptions, focusing on the aspects that may be considered dark patterns and potentially illegal in regions like South Africa, where evergreen contracts are not permitted.

I. The Adobe Ecosystem: A Brief Overview

Adobe's suite of creative software, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere Pro, has become indispensable for professionals and hobbyists alike. The company's subscription-based model, Adobe Creative Cloud, offers users access to the latest updates and a suite of applications for a monthly or annual fee.

II. The Dark Side of Cancellations: A Web of Complications

  1. Opaque Cancellation Processes: One of the primary complaints revolves around the complexity of canceling Adobe subscriptions. Users often find it challenging to navigate the convoluted cancellation procedures, leading to frustration and dissatisfaction.

  2. Hidden Fees and Charges: Users have reported unexpected charges even after canceling their subscriptions. Hidden fees and unclear terms contribute to an atmosphere of distrust, leaving customers questioning the integrity of Adobe's billing practices.

  3. Auto-Renewal Nightmares: Adobe's automatic renewal system has been a source of constant frustration. Many users claim that despite canceling their subscriptions, they find themselves charged for additional months, giving rise to suspicions of a deliberate attempt to keep customers hooked against their will.

III. Evergreen Contracts and Legal Implications:

  1. Understanding Evergreen Contracts: South Africa, like many other jurisdictions, does not permit evergreen contracts. These contracts automatically renew unless explicitly canceled by the user. Adobe's auto-renewal system may be seen as running afoul of these regulations, as users find themselves locked into extended contracts without clear consent.

  2. Consumer Protection Laws: South Africa has robust consumer protection laws in place to safeguard the rights of users. Adobe's cancellation policies need to align with these regulations, ensuring that users have clear and accessible means to terminate their subscriptions without facing undue complications.

  3. Transparency and Fair Practices: Adobe's adherence to transparency and fair business practices is under scrutiny. The lack of clear communication regarding auto-renewals and potential penalties raises concerns about compliance with consumer protection laws.

IV. Community Outcry: Voices from the Adobe User Base

  1. Social Media Backlash: Platforms like Twitter and Reddit are rife with users sharing their negative experiences with Adobe's cancellation process. The collective frustration is palpable, with many users urging Adobe to address these concerns promptly.

  2. Petitions and Advocacy: Online petitions calling for increased transparency and fair treatment of users have gained traction. Advocacy groups are mobilizing to shed light on what they perceive as unjust practices, urging regulatory bodies to intervene.

V. Adobe's Response: Silence and Continued Complications

  1. Lack of Acknowledgment: Adobe's response to user complaints has been met with criticism. Many users report a lack of acknowledgment from Adobe regarding the challenges faced during the cancellation process, exacerbating feelings of frustration and neglect.

  2. Persistent Issues: Despite the outcry, there seems to be little improvement in Adobe's cancellation procedures. Users continue to face challenges, indicating a need for a comprehensive reevaluation of the company's approach to subscription management.

VI. Legal Recourse and Regulatory Intervention

  1. User Rights and Legal Protections: Users in South Africa have rights protected by consumer laws, and Adobe must respect these rights. Legal experts argue that any attempt to enforce evergreen contracts in violation of local regulations could expose Adobe to legal consequences.

  2. Regulatory Oversight: Regulatory bodies in South Africa may need to scrutinize Adobe's practices to ensure compliance with local laws. If found in violation, penalties may be imposed, signaling the importance of aligning international business practices with regional legal frameworks.

VII. Conclusion: Navigating the Adobe Quagmire

In conclusion, Adobe's cancellation policies have become a source of widespread discontent among users, with particular emphasis on potential violations of South African regulations regarding evergreen contracts. The complex web of complaints, ranging from opaque cancellation processes to auto-renewal nightmares, demands urgent attention from Adobe. As users and advocacy groups continue to shine a spotlight on these issues, it remains to be seen whether Adobe will take decisive action to address the concerns or risk facing legal consequences and reputational damage in the process.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

i know the op just wants to voice their opinion and is not looking for help, but for others that want help canceling:

make sure you're aware of the cancellation terms by selecting your plan type (at the top of the page here), https://helpx.adobe.com/manage-account/using/creative-cloud-subscription-terms.html

for info on how to cancel your subscription, this page describes the few steps involved, https://helpx.adobe.com/manage-account/using/cancel-subscription.html

if you want to cancel but are unable to follow the steps described in the "how to cancel page", contact adobe support.

there are 2 ways to contact adobe; chat and twitter (now x):

chat:
use a browser that allows popups and cookies, and click here, https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html?rghtup=autoOpen
in the chat field (lower right), type AGENT
be patient, it can take quite a while to reach a human.

twitter/x:
tweet @AdobeCare

p.s. if you're contacted by anyone (via email or private message), it's much more likely to be a scammer than an adobe representative.

And for everyone new who is reading this

When you 'click to agree' to the subscription terms while buying a subscription, that means that you really do need to read BEFORE you enter your credit card number to buy a subscription

canceling your cc doesn't protect your credit report.  ie, if you have a problem, contact adobe support and explain the issue.  they can be very understanding.

there are 3 ways to contact adobe; chat, phone and twitter:

Hi there,

We appreciate you writing in.

Firstly, we see that you we have checked your account and we see that you have an active Creative Cloud All apps subscription under the email address associated with the community which has a billing issue hence cancelling the subscription is not possible until you resolve the issue.

Also, we dont cancel any subscription or cancel customer's card from our end on a community forum. As suggested earlier by @kglad you will have to connect with the Support team.

Please read the article to learn about cancellation terms for your subscription.

Tried to stop the auto-renew today but after connecting to the Live Chat was told the following:

"I would like to inform you that Adobe do not have option to stop the renewal. Auto-renewal is part of the subscription terms you accepted when you purchased your plan. We also send auto-renewal emails in the 11th month of your subscription as a reminder".  IS THIS LEGAL?

Hi Patricia24400327amm7,

That's true; there is no option to stop the Auto-renewal. Renewal takes place at the end of your 1 Year contract. Please look out for the renewal email and cancel before the plan renews to avoid any cancellation fee.

Feel free to update the thread for any other questions.

Thanks
^KS

I just wanna talk feelings, okay? Adobe is just greedy. Simply. And here's my subjective feeling: I felt like Adobe wanted to force my money out of me. They would use every opportunity to trick me into something. The way they made it so difficult for me to unsubscribe broke me. I've lost faith in humanity. I'm not going back, even if I have to do a flip to find a decent job in the art industry. I loved Adobe in school, after this individual one year experience I hate it and my heart is broken. And this cold ,, you should read the terms and conditions" - as answer to every complain.... Wow. So cold. So greedy. No kisses for you Adobe, you broke my autistic heart.
