Adobe freezes or crashes - 'updating tags'

Recently purchased full Adobe Acrobat Pro license.  For Office 365 for PC

Word is Office 365 ver 1808  (up to date)

Adobe install has put a number of installs on PC ...

Acrobat DC ver 2019.012

Acrobat Pro ver 2017.011

Adobe Distiller ver 17.11

Almost every time I use file>create pdf     from word it fails

Either crashes word, or locks up whole PC.

I can sometime see it has stalled on an Adobe 'pop up window'  ... where there is a progress bar and its says 'updating tags'

Other times it seems to be creating file - then freezes.

Occasionally if I leave it for 5 mins it will complete .... but this is very unsatisfactory,.

I use MS word - print and print to the free pdf maker works fine .............. issue is only if I use the ADOBE make pdf add-in that Adobe installed into Office.

I searched on this forum ... but usual answer is upgrade or run repair install ...... both have been done

Hi Ysw,

We're sorry for the trouble you had, what is the version of Acrobat DC installed? To identify, please take help from the article https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/identify-product-version.html

Make sure you have the latest version of Acrobat DC 19.012.20040 Optional update, August 22, 2019  installed on the machine, check for any pending updates from help>check for updates, reboot the machine after updating Acrobat and check.

You may disable the screen reader option in Acrobat Preferences:

Option 1

To prevent this menu from appearing every time that a PDF file is opened, select the desired settings and enable the option for "Always use the settings from the Reading Preferences).

Option 2:

Disable the screen reader options in Adobe Acrobat:

  1. Within Adobe Acrobat, go to "Edit > Preferences > Reading"
  2. Locate the "Screen Reader Options" section.
  3. In the 'Page vs Document' dropdown box choose "Only read the currently visible pages", and uncheck "Confirm before tagging documents".

You may also refer and try the suggestions from the articles https://www.adobe.com/accessibility/products/acrobat/pdf-repair-repair-tags.html

Anand Sri.

Useful. Thanks

Prints in about 5 minutes as opposed to Save As PDF which is nearer an hour (160 pages)
BUT
file size is 77Mb instead of 10Mb

This is really poor from adobe - both adobe & microsoft files are up to date - I need to use an alternate pdf converter which is crazy because this is a paid subscription - I recall adobe has been crashing from printing in word for about 3 months for me.  File attached below

We also use Acrobat Add-in in MS Word to create PDF.

We have 400 plus pages and it looks like freezing showing "Updating Tags" and took 2 days to complete the PDF.

I wonder is there any setting to exclude the "Updating Tags" process to shorten the time?
