Adobe PDF / Scroll bars still missing

Explorer ,
Sep 19, 2023 Sep 19, 2023

I've looked at all the posts and their answers. It's very frustrating. I've done all the suggestions. Still no scrollbar. If I adjust the page size manually -- pull it in or out -- the bars appear for a few seconds then disappear. I can't grab them.

I cannot scroll up/down or side to side. Mac Ventura. Acrobat Pro version 2023.006.20320

Any other ideas or will there be an update to fix?

Finaly fixed in the latest February update!

There is a new Preference under Page Display: Always show Scroll bars!

And also set the preference to Enable scrolling under Page Display, Page Layout, and the we are finally(!) good to go!

Thanks for the work you did with this.

The thing is, when I view a document like your 2-page doc, I don't have the scroll bar. But I guess this is because you have continuous scrolling enabled, and not single page view.

Few of us can. And yet Adobe is cheerfully touting Acrobat "if you use PDFs."

I WISH I could download an earlier version on CC. Unfortunately I don't have that option in CC. This has been a massive time-suck. Please FIX this for us!

Yes, you can install it even if using CC! Here's how:

- Open CC and go to the Apps list.  Use the 3-dot menu beside Adobe Acrobat to select 'Uninstall'.

- After uninstalling, go here to download Acrobat 2020.

- Install the Acrobat 2020 package, and be sure to turn off auto-updates

So, here is a very dumb question ... If I use the 2020 version of Acrobat, but pay for the latest version, is there a way to install again the CS5 version which I purchased years ago and not have to puy the annual fee? Does anyone have suggestions? I am currently using Mac OS 14.1.1.

Been quiet lately. Any updates on the scroll bar fix? Still using the old version in the meantime.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but if there are no longer any scroll bars in Acrobat, how do you scroll down or up? I work with a Wacom tablet which doesn't have a scroll feature like a trackpad or mouse, so I can't actually scroll through a document.

Yes, this is the problem. You can’t scroll using the tablet.

Install an older version, such as Acrobat 2020. A less "modern" but more useful experience.

No, the stupid part was Adobe taking the scroll bars out.

For Mac users this method works perfectly, not difficult to do, it takes 2 minutes and Acrobat now has scrolling bars always visible, see my comment on page 8:

I've read about this somewhere and applied it in the faint hope that it might work for Acrobat. Lo and behold! It does – for me, but you can try it yourself. Nothing to lose at this stage.

The plist fix works. Apple settings are ignored when you restart Acrobat on Mac.

Also, page up and page down keys on the mac keyboard don't always work in this version of acrobat. I can't figure out the pattern, just like I can't figure out the pattern of when the scroll bar will show up.

I've practically given up on Adobe 😞 . They don't seem to care about a large percentage of their working professional customers who have been vocal about this.

Since I'm unable to download a previous version of Acrobat, my only clunky work around has been using my keyboard up and down keys with one hand, and while I can see the scrollbar, to click and hold down on it with my mouse in the other hand. Of course, this means you can't click off the bar to use another tool.

This really sucks Adobe! You've caused me to lose more than a few hours of what could have been productive work time. I can't believe this still hasn't been addressed.

I can't decide whether Adobe management/programmers literally pay zero attention to the support forums or if they actually intend to eliminate the scroll bar function from Acrobat. Tough luck for any users expecting to have access to essential navigational tools.

There must be some way to escalate the extent of the unhappiness with the missing scroll bars to a higher power at Adobe.

I can only hope this problem doesn't migrate to InDesign and Photoshop.

I have a temporary fix (customer support helped me; I don't remember how), but now I'm getting constant prompts to update to the latest version of Acrobat Pro. The tech support guy said not to do this, and I'm afraid if I do, my fix will be gone. The prompts come every few minutes and it's making me insane. I can't get anything done. My deadlines are in jeopardy.

I can't revert to an earlier version because my IT guy handles that--and he says Creative Cloud doesn't allow that. I can't do the technical fix thatFrans v.d. Geest keeps saying to do--I don't have the permissions and I know next to nothing about programming.

Do any of my other suffering comrades here have contacts in the media? I think it's time to bring this to more people's attention outside of Adobe. Adobe is charging for a product they're not properly delivering, and they've been nearly silent on this since the latest update (which disabled the scroll bars)--more than 3 months ago. (And Amal, repeating the same vague reply isn't helpful, even if that's literally all you know and can find out.)
