Adobe wants to update when I try to open a pdf file

Windows Version: 21H1

Adobe Reader DC Version: Continous Release 2022.001.20117

Whenever I try to open a .pdf file it is a 50/50 chance that an Adobe Updater window opens with the message

"Update is being installed..."

"Please wait until the installation of the Update is finished"

The problem is it doesn't do anything besides blocking me from opening the file. If you close it enough times (ca. 10x) it allows you to view the document.

How can I prevent Adobe Updater to try and update before opening a file?

The  bUpdater registry key did nothing to solve this.

What you are describing is not normal. I suspect that something got corrupted on your system. I would uninstall Adobe Reader and install it from scratch. Hopefully that will clear out whatever is wrong. If that does not help, then run the Acrobat Cleaner tool to uninstall: https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/Labs/cleaner.html
