Question

Can not save pdf to hard disk

I am running Windows 10 Professional 64-bit. I click on the link for a PDF on the Internet from a trusted source in Firefox 71.0. The PDF is automatically opened in the Adobe Acrobat DC application 2019.021.20061. I then attempt to save the PDF to a directory on my hard disk by File | Save As.. and choosing a name and a directory. But after pressing the OK button I get the message:

"The document could not be saved. A number is out of range."

What does this mean ? No matter in what directory I try to save the PDF file or under what name I save it I receive the same message. Does the message mean there is something wrong with the PDF file ?

The Adobe Acrobat DC is displaying the PDF file without any errors which I can see. I can scroll through all the pages of the PDF file without any problem. But for some reason I can not save the PDF file to permanent storage anywhere. I have plent of hard disk space.

Hi there,

We are sorry for the delay in response. If you are still experiencing the issue, please try the following steps and see if that helps:

  • Open the PDF in Acrobat.Choose File Export To > PostScript.
  • In the Save As PDF dialog box, enter a different name for the file, and then click Save.
  • Go to the folder where you saved the PostScript file. Right-click the file and choose Open with Adobe Acrobat Distiller.
  • Acrobat Distiller converts the PostScript file into a PDF file. The PDF file is saved in the same folder.
  • Open the PDF file in Acrobat. Now, try to view the pages or delete, insert, or add a page in the PDF.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks

Amal

Hello, I am using Acrobat Reader, but I cannot save the comments I am trying to add (it says "The document could not be saved. a number is out of range"). Any suggestions on how to fix the problem?

Hi Enrico,

We are sorry for the trouble. as described above, you are getting the error 'The document could not be saved. a number is out of range' upon saving the PDF

You may [please refer to a similar discussion here (https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat/can-not-save-pdf-to-hard-disk/m-p/10856097#M236211) and see if that works for you.

If you open the file it means it's already saved on your machine. You can find out where via File - Properties.

Thanks, it was indeed saved to a temp file location. But there must be something wrong with the PDF format of the file if I can not save it to my hard disk from within Adobe Acrobat DC despite the latter being able to display it for me.

Yes, it is corrupt. Finding out exactly in what way will require quite a bit of technical know-how and an in-depth examination of the file's internal structure.

This is indeed a fault in the PDF, preventing Acrobat / Reader from processing it. Generally this can't be fixed.Try downloading it without involving Acrobat / Reader.

OK, thanks ! But since I know the people who created the PDF is there any way I can tell them what specifically is wrong with the file so that they can correct it and issue an updated correct PDF ? I do not know what tool they used to create the PDF but there obviously must be something wrong with that tool if the PDF file can not be saved to my hard disk from within Adobe Acrobat DC.
