Question

document cannot be saved. a number is out of range

I compile medical reports on an editable UK Ministry of Justice pdf form, using the latest version of Reader DC.

It has always been easy to edit and save until yesterday.

I now cannot save any edited file.

Usually, the font gets smaller as thge text boxes are filled but this is not happening.

I have looked at a number of suggested fixes from other threads but none work.

Any solution?

Hi Simon,

Also, to address the line above:

The properties of the field can be set to a specific type size, such as 10 pts or 12 pts or they can be set to auto-size, in which case the type gets smaller as more text is input. This setting can only be made using the paid version of Acrobat, and only if the creator has not locked down the PDF for editing.

Has this behavior recently changed in a document you have been using? If so, can you get a clean copy of the PDF?

I would like to say it’s impossible for the properties of the field to suddenly change if you are using Reader. So this is striking me as very odd. Either the Ministry of Justice edited the form or the form has become corrupt. I can’t think of anything else.

Do other forms work?

Hi Jane,

the whole thing is odd!

The MoJ RTA3 form is easily available online.

There have been no updates  to the form afaiaa for at least 3 years.

It has always been editable, signable and saveable using the free version of Reader.

I dictate my reports to my secretary and she types them up on the form and emails them back to me.

We have done this trouble free for the last 3 or 4 years.

Yesterday, I started having problems editing and saving the forms she sent me.

I am able to copy and paste all the info onto a new pdf template and I can then edit and save.

I summise from all this that it is something my secretary has done or is doing but the error still occurs when she uses a new downloaded template.

I'm somewhat confused.

KInd regards,

Simon

HI Simon,

  • I downloaded the form directly from the justice.gov site, and not from the pdf filler site.

  • It was last modified in July 2013, so there are no recent changes to the form:
  • I was able to fill it out and save it.

Is your secretary downloading the form from the same place you are? Check that. You might also watch her as she works and see if you can spot something — anything — she is doing that is different from what you do.

With the paid version of Acrobat, you would be able to Export her forms data and then import it into your clean form, but with the free Reader, copy and paste is the only choice.

Because it works when you do it, I would start by looking at her workflow. I can't think of what she might be doing, though. Also, check the exact version of Reader that each of you has.

Hi Simon,

See this thread: This Document could not be saved. A number is out of range.

And try again.

What exact version of Reader do you have? Try updating to the latest version.

Thanks Jane.

That so-called solution does not work at all.

It's obviously a well documented problem yet there is no obvious solution.

Thanks,

Simon

Hi Simon,

In that case, report it to the engineers. This is a user-to-user forum, with some input from staff. There is a second forum for bug reports, and you can track the progress.

Share your feedback on Acrobat DC

Please post the link back here after you report it so others can see it and vote.

Many thanks Jane.

Will do.
