Font changing when creating PDF from Word

Hi,

When I create a PDF document from word, the font Times New Roman is getting changed to Times Roman.

Here I use the Acrobat Pro Dc for my conversion of word to PDF.

I found a similar blog Times New Roman in Word documents changes to TimesNewRomanPSMT in PDF documents (Create PDF)  explaining the problem.

Is there any solution to overcome this problem?

Can someone please help?

In Word go to the Acrobat ribbon and click on Preferences. Select the Conversion Settings profile you want to use and then click on Advanced Settings. Switch to the Fonts section and tick "Embed all fonts" (if it's not ticked already). If you want, save the profile under a new name and then use it when converting your file to a PDF.

"Hey! This is a common issue. Times New Roman sometimes gets changed to TimesNewRomanPSMT because PDF and Word handle fonts differently.

Here are a few solutions:

  1. Embed Fonts: In Acrobat Pro DC, make sure the “Embed Fonts” option is checked when creating the PDF.
  2. Check Font Settings: Ensure Times New Roman is correctly set in Word, and try reinstalling the font if necessary.
  3. Use Tools for Adjustment: If the issue persists, you can use tools like PDFSail to better manage the fonts and formatting in the PDF.

Hope these steps help! Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!"

Hello,

Thanks for the advice, but my problem seems more curly. I am running Microsoft Word (version 16.77) and Adobe Acrobat Pro (version 2024.004.20272). When I go to the Acrobat ribbon in word I get two options to choose from 1- Create PDF and 2- Preferences, when I click on Preferences this pops up and I am not given the options for Advanced settings. Any advice would be  very helpful as the current settings are making a mess of my files.

ps up

I have a word document with mostly Arial 10 point font. Both in Word > Options and in the PDF settings I've selected to embed fonts. When I convert the document to PDF the font size changes to 10.02 and sometime 9.96. I can not seem to fix this challenge. Like others below we have strict font sizing requirements. Any suggestions would be helpful

Hi @Valerie5CA4,

Hope you are doing well. Sorry for your experience with Acrobat!

You might want to change the below setting and check if it works:

In the Acrobat Ribbon, go to preferences-> Advanced Settings and change the below-

1. Go to General-> Toggle the dropdown for Object Level Compression to "Off."

2. Now, go to Fonts-> toggle the checkbox for Embed OpenType Fonts.

Also, you might want to Default Page Size if that aligns to your requirement.

Hope this helps.

Hope this helps others

None of the given solutions were working for me and I FINALLY figured out how to make the fonts stay as a PDF. I am on a MacOS Monterey. I had the word document opened, then I went to "Word" on the top left toolbar, clicked "Preferences". Then I clicked "Save" under Output and Sharing. Then under Font Embedding I checkmarked "Embed fonts in the file". I hope this helps!

I can't convert docx to pdf with preserving style and font in ANY of the ways I've found. Something is always different! How is this possible???

I don't know why users have to go to such extraordinary lengths to simply convert a Word Doc to PDF, but here is what I had to do after none of these suggestions worked for me. I had to upload the Word Doc to SharePoint, then open/download the Word Doc as a PDF. This made it look exactly like the original Word Doc. I hope this helps someone. And I wish both developers would consider user experience a bit more.

I have met this Font changes probem, too  when I create PDF from Word. I checked my PDF option and I have checked the option"embedded all font" but it doesn't work. I found in the list below to embed font from C/Window/Fonts, some fonts are missing.

This issue is not resolved!

I cant find where or how to embed fonts.

I tried every solution here and still have a problem.

I have no Acrobat Ribbon - I don't subscribe to Acrobat - I don't need it, but occasionally I need to save a word doc as a pdf.

It used to be easy to do this without any odd changing fonts. Was this made more difficult to try to force people to buy Acrobat?

Are there any other ways to save a file in a format that does the same as Acrobat?

sharonie2, you seem to be complaining about Adobe's software when you aren't using any! Let's take your points.

- "I have no Acrobat Ribbon,  I don't subscribe to Acrobat". That makes sense.

- "occasionally I need to save a word doc as a pdf." That's fine. When you do this, you are using Microsoft Word and Microsoft's PDF Maker. No connection to Acrobat, no connection to Adobe.

- "It used to be easy to do this without any odd changing fonts. " Perhaps Microsoft changed something.

"Was this made more difficult to try to force people to buy Acrobat? "  It's hard to imagine Microsoft would have done anything to force people to buy someone else's software.

It's clear though that if Word isn't doing what it should, you may be best served by posting in a Microsoft forum.

Funny enough, I just did.

Word support suggest I get help from Adobe and now Adobe suggest I get support from Word.

Typical passing the buck!
