Font doesnt exist in document

Hello. Me and my mother have been working on a document for my mother's piano camp and we have been running into a problem. We have created the document on microsoft word and accidentally used some fonts that were not embedded. After trying to add the fonts that are embedded, Adobe Acrobat Reader DC has been causing a problem for us. The word document doesn't have Times New Roman in the document anywhere, while the PDF says the document does have the font. Do you know what the problem is?

Actually, this is kinda normal behaviour.

Traditionally, Acrobat would not embed fonts from the set that is called the "Base 13": this includes Times, Helvetica, Courier, etc. The logic of that is that everybody (and most printers) woud have, at the very least, those fonts installed so it was deemed unncessary to embed them in PDFs. This aids in keeping the files smaller.

This is not so much true today, but Word's PDF export still does this when you select the more compact option (usually called "Best for electronic distribution..."). However, if you saved the same file to PDF using the "Best for Printing" option (which doesn't compress anything and includes everything, font-wise, for high-quality printing....hence a much larger file size), I bet you will find the Times has been embedded.

 

But to agree with the other poster, you can safely ignore this.

@Zanderz5EA3 This is because in Word, you applied a style called Normal (Web) which is based on Times New Roman so that any paragraph returns that were not styled in Bell MT are coming over into PDF.

 

I replaced all the text in the attached Word document (file name has -cx after it) by creating a new style "Bell MT" and applying that to all the text and paragraph returns. I also took out some bad characters (you can see these by turning on invisible characters) and fixed your quote marks to smart quotations as a suggestion. The PDF will still show Times New Roman in the font list, but it's not used anywhere that I can find and it shouldn't be a problem when you go to print.

PS. I just noticed that the page in my Word screenshot has a typo, the comma should be inside the quote marks, "But wait, Father," she said. You can fix that in the Word document attached and then save again as a PDF.

Okay, I'm back to say that after a bit more research, this does seem to be an error with Acrobat Reader DC thinking that font is not embedded. You can see that I tried to find and replace the font but there are no instances of it in the document. I'm using Acrobat Pro so if you need me to export the file for you, I'm happy to do that if you are still getting that font error.

 

 

See this new PDF attachment (cx-1) with the typo corrected and let me know if you can open it successfully. On Word export, I check the box "Bitmap text when fonts may not be embedded."
