How do I exit edit mode?

This feels like a ridiculous question, but how do I exit edit mode? Searches seem to indicate that there aren't many pelple like me. I was playing with Acrobat, as I just switched to a full Could description, but after having a bit of fun changing elements around, I can't figure out how to just go back to the simple "read" mode. It's making reading PDFs a real challenge. There's lots of help about editing a PDF, but not my silly problem. Could someone just tell me where it all went so wrong?

Well, there are a couple stupid to workarounds for this: First, switching to the "Pan" tool makes the PDF usable again. On the floating toolbar, there's a black mouse cursor for "Select"; if you click that, you're also given a chance to select the pan tool, which is the hand icon. Then, Acrobat works like I expected it to (just reading a PDF, not changing elements). You can also hit contol-L twice quick to enter & exit full screen mode. Or, if you don't mind the irritating yellow bar at the top of the screen, you can go into Preferences|Security (Enhanced) and change "Protected View" to "All Files".
Every new PDF I open starts in edit mode, so I have to switch to pan every single time I open a PDF. This is really dumb, and needing to use workarounds is just silly. I must have something configured incorrectly, unless I'm supposed to use a different PDF reader for most files, and only use Acrobat when I (very, very rarely) want to edit one. The whole point of switching to Acrobat was so I could stop using Sumatra, but, well, here we are. I guess Acrobat just comes free in the box with a CC subscription.

Thank you so much. I had been needing it.
