Question

How to remove cross-document links from opening in the same window?

Is there a way to remove a default setting in the preferences where cross-document linked documents will not open in the same window, but will open as a new tab?  I can preset this for myself, but do not know how I can ensure those I send the linked PDF to will have the same view when opening up linked files embedded in the original pdf. I received a PDF document that could do this regardless of my setting preferences.

"This works when you open only one document."

No.

The Preference setting is turned when this document is opened, and the Preference setting revert to its previous state when this document is closed.

You can open as many documents as you want in the meantime.

Try this:

Open document A

Open document B

Close document A

Close document B

Look at the settings in the preferences.

If Doc B is the one that changes the preferences, though, then try this:

- Open Doc A. Click a link.

- Open Doc B.

- Go back to Doc A and click the same link again. It will now behave differently than it did before.

- Close Doc B.

- Go back to Doc A and click the same link again. It will now behave differently than it did before, again.

That's the issue.

"this change affects all the documents the user will open, not just yours!"

This is true.

If you want to leave the user's preferences untouched you can use this document script:

var bOIP = app.openInPlace;

app.openInPlace = false;

And this script in Document Action : Document Will Close.

app.openInPlace = bOIP;

You need to edit the actual links for that, not mess around with the user's preferences.

Links can be set to either open in a new window, open in the same window, or follow the user's preferences.

However, this can't be automated in Acrobat using a script (maybe with a plugin). It can be done using an external tool, though, like this (paid-for) one I've created: https://www.try67.com/tool/convert-all-links-in-a-pdf-to-open-in-new-window

Your software sounds wonderful, but unfortunately I would prefer to find a solution via a free program.

Add this line of JavaScript as a Document Level Script:

app.openInPlace = false;

I tried this an unfortunately could be doing it wrong. I do not really code. See bellow is this correct?

JR Boulay -Thank you thank you! I realized I was adding to many things. I got it to work

This is possible when you can change the links.
