The Protected Mode (sandbox) is a core architecture change and covers all the features and workflows in Acrobat. By default, the Protected Mode is turned off.

Earlier, it was only available in Acrobat DC and Acrobat Reader. Now the Protected Mode (sandbox) feature in available in Acrobat Pro 2020 and Acrobat Standard 2020 as well.

To enable Protected Mode in Acrobat:

  1. On the menu, go to Edit > Preferences.

2. From the Categories, click Security (Enhanced), and then select Enable Protected Mode at Startup (Preview)

3. Quit Acrobat and relaunch

Additional Info:

Open Windows Task Manager. If you see two instances of Acrobat.exe, then Protected Mode is enabled for Acrobat.

Other than Sandbox Protection: View MIP-protected PDFs in Acrobat 2020

Acrobat Pro and Standard

Now you can use Adobe Acrobat 2020 and Acrobat Reader 2020 Windows and Mac desktop applications to open files protected with MIP (Microsoft Information Protection) solutions including Azure Information Protection (AIP) and Information Protection using Office 365.

Acrobat 2020 and Acrobat Reader 2020 auto-detect a MIP-protected file and prompts you to download the corresponding plug-in from the plug-in download page

Once you download and install the plug-in, the protected files open like any other PDF in Acrobat or Reader.

Is Protected Mode (Sandbox) Windows only, or is it available on Mac?
