PDF Page Sizes - Large format sizes missing (Acrobat Std 11)

Hi All,

We are an Architectural practice that has recently purchased a number of Acrobat Standard 11, licences. This is to supplement the 6 creative suites we already have.

We have discovered however, that Standard does not have large format page sizes available such as A2, A1, A0 etc. Why? I have installed these as standalone licences on 5 other computers to date, all with the same missing information.

The Adobe suites we have are standard and only have acrobat 9, they have these sizes, so how can a higher version have them missing?

This problem is all over the web including these forums. The latest i could find was nearly a year ago. I am hoping Adobe has created a patch to fix this problem since.

Attempts to add custom sizes to match the suites indicates they already exist! We can only create the sizes we need if we use different names, which is problematic for us as many of our settings look for this name to setup our printing.

Getting back to the original post, the A1 format is not present on only one of our machines. We have 6 licences of Adobe Acrobat DC and the A1 is not available on a single machine.

Yes we can add in a custom size for 'Custom A1' or whatever, but we cannot create the default setting A1.

Our problem is that it does not work with Vectorworks (2015). Any drawing saved with a Custom print size cannot be automatically opened with the same Custom print size on another machine (even if you name them exactly the same 'Custom A1', you save to reselect it each time. If you use a built in print size, A4, A3, etc. the drawing will open on any machine with that print setup.

I have tried deleting the whole suite and used the cleanup tools but the A1 just won't appear on the one machine!

I have the same problem. There is a reasonably good workaround. You can permanently define as many additional pages sizes as you needed including non-standard sizes. I have one that is 36" X 90".

Here's how (I'm using Widows 7):

1. From the Start Dialog, choose Devices and Printers in the lower right.

2. On the Devices and Printers control panel right-click on Adobe PDF and select Printing Preferences

3. On the Adobe PDF Printing Preferences dialog click the "Add" button

4. On the Add Custom Paper Size dialog enter a name that will make sense to you like "A1" or, in my case "36 X 90"

5. On the Add Custom Paper Size dialog select the correct unit of measure and enter the width and height

6. On the Add Custom Paper Size dialog click the "Add/Modify" button

7. The new size is now available in the Adobe PDF Page Size drop-down. Select it. Click "OK"

8. On the Devices and Printers control panel right-click on Adobe PDF and select Printing Preferences

9. On the Adobe PDF Printing Preferences dialog you will see that the new size is NOT selected. Select it again. This time it will become the current selection. Making a paper size the current select may not be needed for all applications.

After step 6, if you open an application the new size should appear in the paper size drop-down from Print > Properties > Paper/Quality tab > Advanced button. It may also appear in the drop-down of the Adobe PDF Setting tab.

Pro version you say? That's interesting considering all the research we did and not a single piece of information anywhere on Adobe's website or matrix indicates such a critical difference. This is the most absurd thing I have ever come across. It's just a list of sizes for crying out loud. AND to add insult to injury, the lower version of acrobat in the suites has it!

We looked at Pro, but In Australia, adobe gouge the consumer an extra $250 for pro. We needed NONE of the advertised differences in pro, so we went for Standard.We purchased a number of licences so the cost difference was significant.

Appreciate the assistance Rich, but we were on to the add list, only problem is, we can't add the same name already in windows. So we now will have to go around to all 25 computers inlcuding the suites and create custom sizes and names so our settings work in Revit.

Adobe dropped the ball on this big time, might be worth getting our money back and going back to previous software, its shortfalls far out weight Adobe's sly way of business.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. From what I can tell, there must be a properties file fo some sort that holds paper sizes. I'd think you could replace it with one of your own and installing a new file should be easier than creating custom sizes from scratch for 25 computers.

I'm no longer an expert that this sort of thing, but that's what system administrators are hired to know and do.

Thanks Rich, I am the system administrator But I will look into your suggestion further and consult with our I.T. specialist.

To explain, if you add a new sheet size, you cannot call it 'A1' for example or 'ISO A1' as adobe and windows recognise it to already be existing. Despite adobe recognising it exists, (stopping you from overwriting it) it doesn't show up in the list of paper sizes. Call me a cynic, but I doubt this is an oversight.
