"Use Local Fonts" Option Missing

What it says on the tin: despite what I read on the help page for it, I do not see a "Use Local Fonts" option when I go into the "Preferences > Page Display" menu.

I'm running the most recent version of Acrobat on Mac 13.6.3 with an M2 Pro – I also am running Acrobat using Rosetta, as there are some plug-ins I use that do not support Silicon.

Correct answer JR Boulay

This option has been removed in the December 2023 release.

The only remedy is in the Preflight.

You point to various parts of Pre-Flight, but what do you actually do when you get there? I see all the things you're pointing at, but what do I change to fix the font issue? Thanks.

Has anyone found a solution to this issue?

Yep found a solution. We are moving to Nitro. They offer a transition period of up to 12 months where you sweat existing Adobe licenses and transition onto Nitro without being stung with both license charges. Essentially you get Nitro free for the transition period.

Adobe Acrobat is a horrible product. We actually only transitioned onto it 18 months ago but feedback from our staff is that it's horrible to use, very slow and unresponsive, so we're going to Nitro.

Does it never use local fonts?

Yes. This answer your last question too.

Does it warn if a document uses fonts that are not embedded?

Yes, Acrobat always warns of missing fonts in the layout when the document is opened.
But it only warns of missing fonts for form fields when the user starts to fill them in.

So if the option has been removed, and the wrong characters are showing on a PDF, and no missing font's warning appears, how do you address that? Is there a way to force missing font detection?

This is the issue I'm seeing but no way to resolve right now: https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-reader-discussions/wrong-character-showing-while-opening-pdf/td-p/12305603

OK, the option has been removed (which is sort of obvious at this point and what prompted this thread) but how does the software function now? Does it always use local fonts? Does it never use local fonts? Does it warn if a document uses fonts that are not embedded? When will the help documentation at https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/pdf-fonts.html (and probably other pages) be updated? How does the user now Preview PDFs without local fonts to see how they will look in production?

Hi @Mailstar, Inc.

Hope you are doing well and thanks for reaching out.

make sure you have the recent version 23.08.2042X  installed. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

Also try to repair the installation from the help menu (Win Only) and see if that works.

Please try to reset the Acrobat preferences as described here https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/how-to-reset-acrobat-preference-settings-to-default/td-p/4792082

After extensive testing, resetting preferences in registry and appdata folders, uninstalling and using the cleaning tool, reinstalling from scratch, it seems to me that the "Use local fonts" preference consistently goes missing after installing either the December 2023 or January 2024 update to Acrobat DC. (Windows 10, 64-bit)

I'm wondering if this behavior is by design and Adobe simply has not updated the online documentation. (I didn't think to look in the built-in help, and I've already uninstalled.) I hope there is some equivalent functionality to warn the user about missing fonts in the updated app.

Can Adobe please respond if that option "Use local fonts" is no longer available in latest release?

I am running 23.8.20470.0 and repair doesn't restore the option and update just indicates I am on the latest.
