Unable to Add Fields for Calculation in Adobe Acrobat 2017

Hi all - I'm trying to create a form that auto-calculates total credits, adding up the credits listed in earlier boxes. I have been able to do this before, but while I can select the boxes in the calculate properties, it does not actually select them and add them to the calculation.  Help!

I have tried this; doesn't work.  This is stymieing me.

Acrobat has issues with fields called "undefined", which is unfortunate because it creates such fields automatically when you use the Form Fields Detection Wizard... As mentioned, you can try the Simple Field Notation option or Custom Calculation Script options in the Calculate tab, or you could rename those fields to something a bit more meaningful and try again.

Use the space bar to select the fields.

I've tried this; it still doesn't add them to the calculation.  It does "select" them in the calculate properties box (as does clicking on the tickbox) but that information doesn't get transferred.
