Question

Acrobat Reader DC keeps crashing when multiple pdf files are open and I switch between them.

I have a PC, Win 8.1.  I notice the problem specifically when I have search boxes open in the files and I attempt to switch between the open pdfs.  If I just have one pdf open I don't have this issue.  This makes searching through multiple documents at once impossible.

For what its worth we have many different versions of Acrobat Standard, MS OS and Office on 100+ Dell desktops.  With the last couple of versions of Acrobat we have had a major increase of Acrobat related crashes.  From a software prospective I have tried everything, I mean everything to get all our pretty standard applications to play nicely.  Which led me down the hardware path.  We use a dual monitor setup and entry level NVidia NVS vid cards (295-315 models).  More ram did not help, SSD vs Sata drive did not help....but upgrading the video card to NVidia Quadro K2200 has absolutely helped!!

I just wanted to report that I patched 2 different PC's that previously had the tab switching problem with the latest version of Reader DC (1501620039). The problem  seems to have been fixed.

I plan on testing more PC's but so far things look very promising.

    May 17, 2016

I updated to 2015.016.20039 as suggested by cpcent

worked all day yesterday with four 5 Mb pdf files open all with search boxes open  each in its own instance.

kept switching to hidden instances using windows task bar and....

    IT DID NOT CRASH........yet

    So far so good

    Will repost if if crashes

p.s. samw96239874 don't slag an answer if you haven't tried it. Best to stick to the facts.

Thanks for confirming. Yes, we did fix the tab-switching bug with the May 10th release. Glad to know it is working fine for you.

An update for reader was recently released:

    https://helpx.adobe.com/security/products/acrobat/apsb16-14.html

Has this freezing problem been resolved with the latest update?

This is a security update, not really a hotfix patch, so I wouldn't be surprised if this bug is still prevalent. As I posted above, it is best to stick to the software version that worked best.

Just wanted to report I am yet another user suffering from this problem who cares enough to try to contact Adobe to help solve this issue. Very disappointing that even after creating an account for support I can only post on a forum that appears to be completely ignored and I can not even contact an actual employee.

Even as a software engineering student I can not understand how Adobe can so completely ignore a broadly supported problem with its software. The taskbar is a main way of navigation in Windows and any program that claims to be suitable for Windows can not just crash when a user switches between documents using the taskbar. It is bad enough this problem was not detected and solved during testing and this 'product' was released. Not even responding to tens of customers reporting this problem is just absurd and rude.

The whole concept behind PDF one day was portability. Without a properly functioning reader for the world's most used operating system, the "portable" document format loses all its value. Adobe, do yourself and your customers a favor and dive right into this issue NOW to get this solved a.s.a.p. If you do not, you will lose customers to third party readers and eventually probably even other open standards such as ODT. That would not only cost Adobde its good name - which you do not seem to care about at all - but will over time reduce sales of Adbode Acrobat.

Allow me to provide you with a few simple steps to solve this problem without more damage than has already been done:

    1. Acknowledge this is a serious problem with you software and apologize

    2. Give a good explannation for why it took you half a year to perform step 1, if available

    3. Share a plan to solve this problem with your users to make them believe in your capabilities somewhat more again

    4. Reproduce the problem and analyse it. Reach out to users for more detailed information if necessary. I hereby volunteer to provide you with whatever more information you need and even execute a few tests and diagnostic tools you may need to execute in more different evironments.

    5. Solve this problem

    6. Release a hotfix

    7. Incorporate the solution to this problem in your next release

    8. Evaluate how this problem has been introduced, how it has been missed in testing and how this forum has been ignored for half a year and learn from it

    9. If any concrete measures are taken to avoid similar problems in the future, share them with your users to give them some faith in your capabilities again.

Have same issue on Win 7 64 bit, Reader DC 2015.010.20060

Can make it crash right now.

2 x 5 Mb file open in second screen with search boxes in each, each file in a separate instance. (DON"T GET ME STARTED ON STUPID TAB CRAP) (CLEARLY NOTHING TO DO WITH TABS BECAUSE I DON'T USE THEM)

Have Multiple Word instances, Multiple Windows Explorer windows,  2 files open in Power point, 2 Firefox instances

Go to Windows task bar click on either PDF ..... spiraling circle of NOT RESPONDING

All other programs that are open have no problems.

Click close 'X' in upper right of either Reader DC both close, have to reopen both and find my place again.

    WORK AROUND

minimize windows hiding Reader DC (NEVER USE task bar to switch to PDF)

We are also experiencing this problem since the last 3 versions ->1500 Users not able to work properly with a simple PDF reader for over half a year. That is not professional at all....

As we all can see Adobe support doesn't care at all! Last staff reply is from

We are currently planning the migration of all our PDF applications to Foxit, including form creation etc. ,getting completely away from Adobe. Seeing this thread, I think many other users will do the same

@yvesr93749591, I have a question for you: how are the deployment options for Foxit in a corporate environment? Is it easy to update via startup script or MSI?

Adobe Reader DC (v 2015.010.20060) crashes as previous users have described (2 or more open PDFs + switching between tabs using windows toolbar = crash). Windows 10 64bit.

Old Acrobat Reader X etc worked fine. Also, the new save dialogue is a major hassle when working with/annotating multiple PDFs.

Dude it is shocking how little response or effort is put in by the Adobe group.
What is even more shocking is that PDF is their brainchild and yet other developers manage to get their readers to work just fine.
There are many free readers available, with print, convert, edit, and many of the required functionality.
Some unfortunately have adverts, pop-ups, or limited trials. (suppose they need to make money somehow).

Just like original poster, I suffered with the program crashing whenever I had to switch between multiple opened PDF's on DC. Adobe Reader DC is very unreliable in my personal opinion. I have since uninstalled it and reverted back to Adobe Reader XI. Very stable, no crashes whatsoever. Here's some quick instructions for Windows, which is what both me and the original poster is using. The instructions should be similar on Mac as well

    1) Remove Adobe Reader DC from Add/Remove Programs (Control Panel)

    2) Go to the Adobe Reader downloader page: https://get.adobe.com/reader/

    3) Click "Do you have a different language or operating system?"

    4) Choose your OS

    5) Choose language

    6) Choose "Reader 11.0.10" *IMPORTANT! Don't choose DC otherwise you're back to where you started*

Download and Install. When you launch Adobe Reader, go to Edit > Preferences, click the Updater category, and select Do not download or install updates automatically. This will prevent Adobe from trying to update itself to the horror that is DC.

Now enjoy using a workable version of Reader.

Note you cannot install Reader XI on top of DC. The installer will detect DC being the newer version and cancel setup.

Thank you so much for suggesting the return to Acrobat Reader XI (and for telling me where to find it!). Sanity has been restored - I can't think how such a widely-used program can have 'developed' to be so bad.

I have the same problem.  First file opens fine but any second file will crash the software.  Windows 10 version 2015.101.20059.  VERY annoying.

The Adobe Acrobat Reader DC still crashes on Windows 10 (Build 10586) after an upgrade to the newest version 15.010.20060. As BrokenSyntax_‌ has pointed out already, it only happens when files are switched using the taskbar thumbnails.

I'm seeing the exact same problem in my environment, and I've been able to duplicate it on multiple computers.

    Duplication steps:

    1) Open more than 1 PFD document in DC; should be displayable with multiple tabs

    2) Minimize DC to taskbar

    3) Open DC again by selecting one of the individual PDF tabs from the  taskbar

    4) Frozen!

Is Adobe doing anything to rectify this problem?
