Adobe Acrobat Reader - Strange Characters

When I open PDF's in Adobe Acrobat Reader that have been sent to me by others, the font is replaced by strange characters but will show the text when I click on the field.

I have not seen any solutions to this issue for Adobe Acrobat Reader. I will be forever in your debt if anyone can crack this!
