Adobe Reader DC - Won't open, process hangs

I'm seeing a trend at work on our Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 systems. Almost all systems have version 2015.020.20039 installed. The problem does happen on 2017.009.20044.

Here's what happens:

Open a PDF file from the desktop, Outlook or any other location on the computer and sometimes it will open but most of the times nothing happens. When I go to Task Manager you can see the process for Reader there, and depending on how many times I try to open the PDF, more processes open. If I close End those processses usually I can open a PDF once and then the same thing happens again.

Here's the dump file for the process.

    Hi JROP,

Would you try turning off Protected mode for testing purposes only and if you see a difference let us know.

How to turn off PM, Launch Reader > Edit > Preference > Security(Enhanced). Turning off Protected Mode is not recommended.

Will be waiting for your response.

Hi, it is currently off; that did not seem to help.

    Thank you,

    HI JROP,

You may try uninstalling Reader using Cleaner tool: Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs

Restart the machine and try installing again.  Try to reproduce the issue, let us know if that makes any difference.

If the issue still persists, please help us with the new process dump.
