I kept getting this problem with my Adobe Acrobat reader.  I tried to repair and even reinstall but it keeps coming up. Not sure if it has anything to do with recent Windows updates. I am using Windows 10 64bit.

Help!

Just to chime in (hello everyone by the way!):

I have also been seeing it - Acrobat Reader DC x64 - on two different machines, and along the same timelines as this thread:

1. Personal (home) PC with Windows 10 (home)

2. Old work laptop (Surface) with Windows 10 (corporate)

Two above machines had had all updates/upgrades in place, latest version of Adobe Reader DC x64 installed etc.

Registry trick worked on my work laptop, had not deployed it on home PC as I was awaiting proper fix.

Interestingly,

Hi there,

The new version 23.08.20555 of Acrobat is now available addressing the fix for the issue.

Please update the application from the help menu > check for updates and reboot the computer once.

You may also download the patch manually from the link https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/ReleaseNotesDC/index.html

It started popping up on me again this morning. After I restarted the other day, it would do it every once in a while, like with every 10-15 PDFs, but now it's back to popping up every time I open a PDF.  Back to square one. =(

Hi kmoodysoh,

your fix is still working fine for me even after several restarts, Windows Update and complete powering off my Pcs. Could be it only hits certain OS? (I am working on Windows 10, 64 bit)

I was thinking the same thing. The issue returned on my Windows 10 work PC after the update but it doesn't seem quite as frequent. It's still a lot though.

I do not have this issue on my Windows 11 PC at home. Both are running the same versions of Acrobat.

Also @John327305827isa .......

I am running Windows 11 Pro 22H2, 22621.2428 (Oct. 2023 update) on 2 computers. I also run Windows 10 22H2 with the Oct. 2023 update. All 3 have the problem. The problem started on all 3 after installing Windows 10 & 11 Sept. 2023 updates.

All 3 computers have the latest version as of today of Adobe Reader DC, v2023.006.20320 64-bit. One of the Windows 11  computers has the 64-bit version installed straight (after uninstalling and using the cleanup tool). The other 2 computers have the 64-bit version which was upgraded a few months ago automatically from 32-bit.

My tests on all 3 computers over the past month since this problem showed up indicate clearly that the problem is related to the "Enable PDF thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer" setting found on the Adobe Reader Preferences, on the General page. If the setting is enabled, I get the popup error message. If the setting is not enabled I do not get the popup error message.

In past messages @Meenakshi Negi (from Adobe) posted links on how to uninstall Adobe (Reader) DC and use the cleanup tool, followed by installing the latest version. Did not solve the problem. Also @Meenakshi Negi posted links on how to enable the CrashDumps so that we could send crash logs to Adobe. For some reason the crash dumps are not created for me. As far as I know only one poster here was able to get crash dumps.

I used the links posted a few message above by @kglad and posted the problem there but so far I only got just 1 "me too".

@FuzzyJohn

the feedback for properly placed suggestions/bugs is zero.  whether they actually gain attention is anyone's guess but that's still better than the 0% chance in a forum thread like this one.

Understood... but, as I said earlier, I checked there and I couldn't find anything related to this particular problem. My post there seems to be the only one, as far as my search abilities would go.

Did you post there?

this worked for me. I seem to get the error message when shutting down a pdf file, so was never sure why I was being told it shut down unexpectedly!

Thumbnail Preview is disabled but it didn't solve the problem. Seems like the issue appears depending on the amount of opened pdf

By @Kraft24

Also @Mosabbir ...

That is not my experience. I had the "Enable PDF thumbnails preview in Windows Explorer" unchecked (in Adobe Reader DC Preferences) for over a week and I got no errors. Minutes after enabling that option the errors returned.

In addition, for me, the error has nothing to do with "the amount of opened pdf". I start my computer, log in and just wait... do nothing, and usually within 5 minutes or less the error pops up.

Is Adobe is aware of this problem, and if so, has the company said anything about pushing out a fix?

By @Terrence Cain

@Meenakshi Negi is from Adobe and has posted a few times here, mainly asking for us to do the crash dump procedure, which for me has not worked, so I suppose Adobe is aware of the problem. Now let's see how much attention it gets.

Checked there and I couldn't find anything about this problem. I posted myself and I added the word "BUG" in front of the title, otherwise it looks like it will be treated as an idea.
