Question

Adobe XI not working with windows 7.

Since installing Adobe XI (11.0.03) when I open an exiting or new pdf on my laptop I get the message:  Adobe Reader A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

I uninstalled and reinstalled several times.  I followed the instructions on the Adobe web site.  Nothing is working and I need to be able to do my work.  How can I get Adobe X so I can install that older version.  Can't find it on the Adobe website.  HELP!!

Adobe 11.0.4 locks up after a few seconds of starting and changes to "Not responding" if you attempt to access any item within the welcome screen

At the bottom of this post is the registry fix to stop the lockup.

There is no fix for the situation on certain computers except installing Adobe Reader X instead of Adobe Reader XI. I put two different posts together to create this fix. This is a work around.

Installing Adobe Reader 11.0.1.36 worked without locking up
Installing Adobe Reader 11.0.4 did not. It locked up after a few seconds

Adobe turned on extended pane to be open by default on 11.0.4

Adobe 11.0.1.36 broke when I enabled extended pane or updated Adobe Reader to version 11.0.5.
I figured adobe 11.0.4 might also work if I turned that pane off. It did.
I found how to turn that pane off from another forum that the person simply didn't like that pane starting up.

Now adobe 11.0.5 works as long as that pane is registry disabled.

The strange thing is that I used the same adobe 11.0.4 install on several windows 64 machines with no issues. Certain machines did it.

Things tried that did not work:
    Updated java
    No java
    No adobe JavaScript
    No antivirus
    No viper security center.
    IE to defaults
Trusted sites lowered and adobe.com added
    No adobe flash
Temp files all locations cleaned up.
    Protected mode disabled
    Enhanced security disabled
    Adobe cleanup 9 and 10
All adobe folders renamed and adobe registry manually cleaned up.
    Automatically update disabled.
Running the EULA.exe and accepting the terms
    And a bunch more.

Adobe Reader XI will still lock up if I click anything in the Extended Pane: Tools, Sign, or Comment. Just don't do it and everything works. If you need those features, perhaps Adobe X is for you.

    Open Notepad
Put in the data between the "======"
Save the file as    "adobefix.reg"    including the quote marks to the Desktop
Run the adobefix.reg file on the Desktop that you just saved

I have a similar issue - I have a copy of Adobe Acrobat Pro 11.0.4 (on a Windows 7 computer) that worked perfectly for 14 months or so and then in the last couple of weeks has become flaky  .. unusable.  Most times it wil open an exsitng PDF and then stalls if I try to do anything other than look at the first page("not reponding message") and I have to start again.  Files are OK since if I transfer them to my laptop an older version of Adobe Acrobat Pro works fine,  HELP!!

I was the original poster of this issue and the problem still exists.  I uninstalled Adobe XI and reinstalled Adobe X to be able to open pdf files.  That is the only work around I had success with.  There is a problem with Adobe XI and windows 7.

Reader XI on Windows closing without a message can be fixed (circumvented) by any of these steps...

    • Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
    • Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
    • If you cannot open Reader by itself, try to disable Protected Mode in the registry; download, unzip, then run the attached registry script
    • It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

just downloaded XI again...still the same : a big grey screen appears for a few secs...and then it all disappears.

Not sure which version this was. Maybe someone could post a link here to go directly to the 11.0.4 version

but as stated before, I doubt that will help.

This has been going on since may 2013 now...and still no solution from adobe..

    which is very disappointing

I am already past frustration, not a good sign I guess.

I just fixed the same problem on my PC (Win 7 64 bit with Adobe Reader XI).

Here is how I fix it:

    1. Uninstall Adobe Reader XI (or all existing version) in control Panel

    2. Browse to below folders, rename them to “Arcobat-old”

    C:\Users\marshal wang\AppData\Local\Adobe\Acrobat

    C:\Users\marshal wang\AppData\LocalLow\Adobe\Acrobat

    C:\Users\marshal wang\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat

    3. Download and install Adobe Reader X

    4. Problem fixed.

    Hope this help.

To everybody in this (old) topic who still has the problem: does update to 11.0.4 (Reader XI) or 10.1.8 (Reader X) fix it?

Ihave the exact same issue. Windows 7 64 bit, Adobe XI. Whenever I open a PDF document, Adobe hands and Windows gives the error message "Adobe Reader A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.   Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is  available."

    May 23, 2013

I got no messages just wouldn't open PDF's.  Then when I uninstalled and tried to reinstall the reader I got the wrong message and it won't download and now I can't download anything related to PDF's.

Hi!  This is not an answer.  I am having the same problem.  I received a message saying Adobe was updated, probably to XI.  Was on a web site and tried to read a PDF and couldn't.  I have this problem on occasion due to the "Do not save encrypted pages" option being checked in internet options.  I took care of that but still could not read PDF.  I unistalled Adobe Reader and then tried to download and install Adobe XI and it will not download.  Anyone that can help.

Could you please let me know the exact behavior that is observed once you try and launch any PDF. If you receive any error message then please post a screenshot of the same.

Also, could you please elaborate what happens when you say that Adobe Reader XI will not download. Do you receive some error message of sorts or is there some other issue.

Just to clarify Adobe Reader X was working fine until after uninstalling XI I tried to reinstall X and it will no longer work. Here is a screen shot of the error in XI - the programme opens fine but this error displays when I try to open a file. Thanks.

I am having exactly the same problem. I have tried uninstalling and resinstalling version X and that will not work either. I tried the suggestions from Ankit_Jain also to no avail. I really need a solution fast! Thanks.
