Question

Can't open a file with the word, "inventory"

Hello - I came across something yesterday that I am banging my head against the wall trying to figure out.  I work for a small I.T. Company, and one of our customers uses Adobe Reader DC to open PDF's.  Everything works fine, EXCEPT, in Outlook 2010 emails, any attachment that contains the word, "inventory" WILL NOT open!  Nor can the attachment be saved!  (The error message is - "Cannot create file: [filename.pdf]. Right-click the folder you want to create the file in, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions for the folder.")  I tried numerous things - I forwarded two separate emails from the client to my email account, and the attachments opened as expected.  I sent them back, and, both failed as they previously had.  After several other trials/errors/attempts, I decided to change the filename on my end before sending it back.  WA-LA!  The exact file, only with a different filename, opened on the client's workstation!  I even tested, for instance, changing the name to "inventory1" instead of just "inventory" and it worked!  Bottom-line...  I asked my client to ask the sender of those particular attachments to change the name of the attachment.  This problem is machine-specific - he has another system that he was using to open the attachment.  (Not sure of OS or email client? - His is Win 7 Pro, and, again, Outlook 2010.  Mine is Win 10 Pro and Thunderbird.)  Bottom-line, as crazy as it sounds, it appears that his particular system refuses to open a PDF in Adobe Reader DC with the stand-alone word "attachment"  The error message is bogus because any other PDF file, including email attachments, open and/or save without issue; again, it's just the ones with the [stand-alone] word "inventory" that don't.  IS there ANY LOGICAL explanation???  I ultimately have found a work-around; i.e., DON'T USE the [stand-alone] word "inventory" when sending PDF files as attachments, however, obviously, that is very "LAME!"  Thanks in advance for any insight!

I wouldn't disagree or argue with that; in fact, I thought of that possibility.  I'm not sure if I should post the same question on a Microsoft forum?  Outlook is a common denominator, however, I failed to mention that I don't use Adobe Acrobat Reader DC; I use Nitro Reader.  I'm not sure what reader the other device he uses has?  There could potentially be a possibility of testing another scenario using Windows 7 Pro and Outlook 2010; unfortunately, that would take a little time and involve coordination between several parties.  I'm not sure that the one having the problem wants to put a lot of expense into a "real" solution?

When Outlook can't save the attachment then it is not a problem of any PDF viewer.

OK - that does make sense - however, the question is, why will Outlook save ANY AND ALL PDF's EXCEPT the ones with the stand-alone word "inventory?"  How/Why does Outlook discriminate against that one particular word?  (Or, how/why does Adobe?)  Though I can't remember exact scenarios, I have seen several times in the past when Outlook wouldn't save a file, and it wasn't necessarily an outlook issue.

Looks like a bug of Outlook.
