Question

Cannot print PDF files on Mac OS X

Hi,

since some update from Reader 8.1 to 8.1.2 I cannot print PDF files anymore. Meanwhile I installed Reader 9, but with no luck.

If I crank up the preferences I get the error "Failed to load an application resource (internal error)." ... maybe there is something wrong with the installation, but even an reinstall doesnt fix it.

If I try to print I get only the message "The document could not be printed" and then "There were no pages selected to print." ... no matter what PDF I try to print.

The Apple Preview works without any problems, so the PDFs should be good.

Can anyone help me on this ... its really frustrating.

Best Regards

First let me state that this is my solution on a Macintosh running 10.7.5 and Acrobat Pro X (with all the latest updates).

This problem started for me just this last weekend. I have been to every so-called solution that I could find via a Google search and NONE of these "solutions" even by the self-tagged "experts" work. PERIOD!

I decided to follow one suggestion to install Acrobat Pro 9. However, instead of uninstalling Acrobat Pro X first, I left it installed.

During the initial startup of Acrobat 9 after installation I was offered the option of installing an Extra feature called Adobe PDF Printer which allows me to "Create Adobe PDF files from any application by printing to Adobe PDF Printer". I opted in to that extra.

Once Acrobat Pro 9 had started I tested it using one of the PDF files that had failed to print with the dreaded "No pages selected......" error messages. THE FILE PRINTED AS EXPECTED!

I then decided I would uninstall Acrobat Pro X, but on a whim decided to try to print the same PDF file that had just printed using Acrobat Pro 9 one more time. IT PRINTED!

All I can figure out is that somehow selecting the option to have Acrobat Pro 9 install the option for allowing other applications to create a PDF repaired something within the Mac operating system. Just a guess.

    Hope this helps someone.

Guys this worked for me, try adding your printer again but for the DRIVER use GENERIC POSTSCRIPT DRIVER and then make that your default printer, then open adobe and try and print using the newly added printer with the postscript driver.... i just added a second printer using the postscript driver and kept my original printer/ with right driver installed as well... or just chnage your current printer so it uses the postscript driver...

I got mine to work by going to Preferences - Print & Fax. I selected  my printer and clicked Options & Supplies. Under the driver tab I  changed the "Print Using:" box to Generic PostScript Printer. I'm not  sure if this is what you are supposed to do. I'm not an expert but it  worked for me so I am going with it.

This printing issue with Adobe Acrobat Pro or Reader has been going on for at least 4 years!  Adobe, you need to fix this!

Four years ago, I bought a Canon PIXMA MP500 and immediately upon installing the printer (with the latest drivers, running permissions, etc.), I could not print PDFs from Adobe Acrobat Pro (for Mac). I always got the following error message:

Error: Unable to open raster stream - :No such file or directory

I was forced either to "print as image" or use Preview in order to print, which is not ideal. I was very disgruntled at having purchased Acrobat Pro when I couldn't print from it properly.

Now, four years later, I have upgraded my printer to a Canon MG6120 (again, I've downloaded the latest drivers, etc.), and I am dumbfounded to discover that this PDF printing problem with Acrobat Pro and Reader STILL EXISTS.   I had considered upgrading to Acrobat Pro 9, but why should I bother now? I am still using Acrobat Pro 8.2.5. I am now considering abandoning Acrobat Pro for SmileOnMyMac's PDF Pen, which seems to have all of the features I would need, and at a fraction of the cost of Acrobat. (And there's even a money-back guarantee.)

I just downloaded the demo version of PDF Pen and it prints like a charm!  Here is a link to the basic info page:

    http://smilesoftware.com/PDFpen/index.html

Here is a chart comparing PDF Pen with Acrobat, PDFClerk, and Preview:

    http://smilesoftware.com/PDFpen/compare.html

I use SmileOnMyMac's excellent PageSender Fax Software, and I've had nothing but great experiences with support whenever I've needed it. Judging by the reviews of PDF Pen, there are many happy customers.

I believe the problem is that Adobe reader is trying to pstoraster on Mac os x which does not exist! See solution at the link:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=13092335

I've posted a bug report with Adobe.

Thank you, cytan299, for your message and the link to your solution in the Apple thread.  I'm a bit confused, though, by the sentence, "You have to rename the pstoraster which may already in in the /usr/libexec/cups/filter directory before doing the above."  What would I rename the pstoraster to before typing the following into Terminal?

    *************************************
    cd /usr/libexec/cups/filter
    sudo ln -s pstocupsraster pstoraster
    **************************************

Could you clarify the steps? I must admit that I'm a bit squeamish about doing anything in Terminal.

Thanks for your help and for posting a bug report with Adobe!

Sorry, I didn't add in that part in.

First make sure that pstoraster does exist:

    cd /usr/libexec/cups/filter

    ls pstoraster

Either the file is found or it's not. If "ls" finds it, then just move it to some other name: e.g. pastoraster1

    sudo mv pstoraster pstoraster1

Then you can follow the ln command to soft link pstocupsraster to pstoraster.

Please post here if it works

So I cannot see why it is failiing, all other applications work fine. but printing anything from Adobe simply failes, therefore leading me to believe the issue is very much with Adobe.

From a google search, I found the following HP forum note

    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Mac-printing-and-scanning/MacOSX-amp-trouble-printing-ADOBE-documents/td-p/335082

This lists the following options to fix

    1. Get Reader into thumbnail view and select the pages you wish to print by selecting that thumbnail for each page.

         Still didn't work

    2. Repair Adobe Reader

         Still didn't work

    3. Unistall/Reinstall Reader

         Still didn't work

    4. Repair disk permissions

         Still didn't work

    5. Open the pdf's and print from Preview.

Only option which works, i.e. don't use adobe.

I cannot see where to 'crank up the preferences' stated by MIchael_Mertel in first post to see tht actual error ?

Any ideas what is going on ?  When can we have a fix ?

    Many thanks

I suggested earlier in the thread that you try to reset your printer subsystem. It will remove all printer drivers, but will frequently fix gremlins that other methods will not.

I spoke with tech support at HP. They told me to print as image, and that worked. The other part to look at was most current drivers for the printer being used and firmware updates on the printer. I don't like the idea of print as image all the time. The tech also said it can be cause by a corrupt file or font. Check out those. I can open back down to an earlier vs. of Adobe and it works, but is a pain. Good luck.

It's some strange font issue.  I was having the same problem with a file I created in Illustrator.  I converted all fonts to outlines and now it prints fine.  Hopefully Adobe will fix this issue.

Sorry, forgot to mention that resetting isn't a figure of speech. You have to add back the printer, and point it at the driver, just like you were installing the printer.

    Greetings,

I was having the same problem, running Mac 10.5.6, Adobe Reader 8.1.4, and the Canon Mac drivers V1.81. I tried the Print as image check box, and that worked well, though slowly. I tried the resolution issue, and that did nothing. Finally, on the verge of yanking the software out and throttling it like a rent-delinquent roommate, I tried a reset of the Printing system:

System Preferences --> Print and Fax --> Right click the printer and select Reset Printing System. Bang, I was back in business. Root cause? Underlying jam up in the CUPS process, or bogus commands to from the software, or the printer she is...unwell. Who knows.

    Hello,

Same problem printing PDF files from Adobe Reader in latest versions of Mac OS 10.5x. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling latest version and other standard troubleshooting methods without success. Same files can be accessed via Apple's Preview and printed fine. So, WTF does anyone need Adobe Reader or any line of their similar products for? Tried to appeal to their tech support and should have saved time and frustration by just pounding a nail into my eye.

Poor product compatibility for Mac, poor technical support, poor pricing structure for upgraded product line. The business is just too competitive for me to waste any more time with Adobe. Do yourself a a favor and simply bypass Adobe Reader all together. There are other FREE and lower cost options out there.

I was having the same problem of not being able to print from Adobe Reader. I have two printers on my network. One is a networked HP laserjet printer. Printing from Adobe Reader to the HP laserjet printer works just fine. I also have a USB Epson inkjet printer, which is shared on the network through one of my desktop Macs. Trying to print to the Epson printer from Adobe Reader did not work. I monitored the communications between the origination print queue (on the computer where the PDF file resides) and the destination queue (on the computer that is sharing the Epson printer to others on the network). I noticed what appeared to be proper communications between the origination and destination queue and the PDF file appeared to be successfully transferred to the destination queue. However, the PDF file was never sent to the printer from the destination queue...the destination queue would just empty without any notification that the PDF file never got sent to the Epson printer.

After investigating the printer configuration settings within the Adobe Reader Print... dialog box, I was able to come up with a workaround that allowed me to print from Adobe Reader to the USB Epson printer. Within the Print... dialog box for the selected printer, select the following:

Print...->Advanced... button->Print as image check box

After doing this, I was able to print PDF files from Adobe Reader to the USB Epson inkjet printer from two Mac computers that previously were unable to do so.

Let me know if this works for anyone else.

I just found this thread. I am also having the issue and thanks to the thread am now using the workaround of printing as an image. However this does not fix the issue. How frustrating that Adobe still has not fixed the problem. It has been ongoing for months. When is this going to be fixed?
