Installation error 150201 after uninstalling on Windows 10.

Community Beginner ,
May 08, 2022 May 08, 2022

Apparently I have made a grave mistake, because I uninstalled Acrobat Reader DC in the process of trying to diagnose an issue, and now I cannot reinstall it again. Every time I try to install, I get the error code 150201.

I have tried many things, including restarting my computer, updating Windows 10, updating my graphics drivers, the AcroCleaner tool, and also the off-line installer. After all of them, the installation fails with the same error 150201. I assume there has to be a solution, but I'm not going to reinstall Windows in order to address this issue.

How can I find out what the real issue is and how to solve it? Thank you in advance.

I was able to resolve this. It turned out that the installer was failing to extract the setup files from the installer.bin package during the installation process. I have no idea why that was happening, and the installer.bin file and the temporary folder it was in get deleted after the installer fails and is exited. However, if you navigate to the directory where that file temporarily lives before clicking okay on the error message, it's possible to make a copy or directly extract the setup file

Hello @Patrick_William5485

I hope you are doing well, and thanks for reaching out.

The error often occurs when the installer fails to extract the setup files from the installer.bin package during installation. This can happen due to:

  • Corrupted or incomplete downloads
  • Conflicts with antivirus or endpoint protection software
  • Issues with temporary folders or permissions
  • Leftover files from previous installations.

Download and run the Acrobat Cleaner tool to remove the installed or leftover in

Looking at the log file, I initially thought the installer.bin might not be getting extracted to the temp directory because of a permissions issue, because the subfolder was no longer present after the installer exited. However, I watched it carefully and it is actually copying that file, so I'm completely at a loss.

I have no idea why that was happening, and the installer.bin file and the temporary folder it was in get deleted after the installer fails and is exited. However, if you navigate to the directory where that file temporarily lives before clicking okay on the error message, it's possible to make a copy or directly extract the setup files using a program like 7zip. Once I was able to extract the setup files, I could simply double-click on setup.exe and complete the installation that way. Definitely a convoluted process, but thankfully it worked!

This actually solved the issue for me, a really weird interaction...
For anyone wondering where the temp files are, they're in

C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Temp

you'll find a folder in there go inside then you'll find the installer.bin the original comment is talking about, extract that with 7zip or any software you like

Thank you kind stranger for the help!

Just opening the installer file with 7zip and extracting the setup files worked like a charm. 😄

Download and run the Acrobat Cleaner tool to remove the installed or leftover installation files. Reboot the computer. Ensure that all the mandatory and optional updates of the operating system are installed. And then try reinstalling Acrobat Reader. Run the setup file as an Administrator, right click on the setup file, and choose Run as Administrator.

Temporarily Disable Antivirus. Check Temp Folder Permissions. Ensure the user has full access to:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp\
C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Temp\

Workaround:

Use 7-Zip to Extract Installer Files

Open the .exe installer using 7-Zip
Extract the contents to a folder
Run the setup.exe manually from the extracted files.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,
