Reader 8+ "downloads" PDF to temp directory instead of loading directly

When I have Reader 8+ embedded (either in a web browser or program) and try to open a PDF it seems to be copying the file to a temp directory THEN opening it. Some of my files are rather large, so this can take 20+ seconds to open a file.

If I use Reader directly (not embedded) and open the same file, it'll load immediately. Adobe Reader 7 loads the file instantly (embedded or not) without copying it. I verified this by watching the disk usage in the Windows task manager. All versions of Reader 8 & up transfer the size of the file, while version 7 doesn't.

I need to upgrade to a newer version of Reader, but because of this I'm stuck using version 7.

Is there a way to fix this in the newer versions?

No PDF file can be viewed without first saving it to the local computer, as a temporary file or a regular file.

Also, why are you using such old versions of Reader?

But the files are already on the local machine, they are not over a network. So there should be no need for Reader to save it.

And I'm using the old version, because 7 doesn't save the file when opening it, while 8 and above do, taking 20+ secs to open.
