I had the same problem, using Winows XP Pro.  Couldn't remove Reader, couldn't update, couldn't do anything.  I finally looked in the Reader folder.  Look at your drive, program files, adoobe, reader, then go to Setup Files.  There should be a subdirectory with this file in ti - AdbeRdr930_en_US.msi .  I double clicked it, which runs the install.  I will assume it is something that Windows and Adobe Reader did to not play nice with some update, but Reader "installed" itself.  This corrected the problem, and the updates were able to install.  Although I hope this is the same file name you will have, the file should be in that sub-directory.  Running it again should eliminate your problem.  Good luck.

Thanks, RD - I had tried that install - it is the Windows installer - it still didn't work. Right now I'm working on the registry changes that were suggested further up in the Forum. If that doesn't work, I'll try the .msi file again.

Thanks

You can always go to Foxit reader web site. I got disgusted with the problem originally and just downloaded that. it works just as well on pdf files.

Amazing... I have tried all that list listed. I upgraded from Acrobat 8 Pro to 9 Pro and I keep getting a message uninstallation of the patch is not supported when I try to run the 'Repair' or manually install the Acrobat 9.3.2 patch.

The upgrade installer told me to uninstall the previous version. It's getting to the point thats it's not woreth the frustration to patch it.

Adobe... the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

My biggest problem with Acrobat, why does it not remember the last folder openned.

Yes - I have tried what each person has suggested - and will continue to do so. I'm waiting for a call back from Adobe.

Hi,

solved problem by temporary deactivating access protection of virus scanner (McAffee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5.0i). My computer runs Vista Home Premium x86).

In my case, make sure to enable the service of 'Windows Image Acqusition(WIA)' before running update. It works.

You can access it by inputting 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.msc' in Run Command dialogue window. Good luck guys.

Thanks - I tried WINDOWS\system32\services.msc - error 1402

Go to http://acrobatsupport.com/error-1500-error-1704-or-error-2711-when-installing-adobe-acrobat-or-reader-8/ to fix the problem.

I installed Windows Installer Cleanup Utility as Acrobat Support suggested and it fixed my problem.

Just tried the cleanup utility - error message "permission denied."

When you get "permission denied" is there an option to "retry"? - this came up when I manually updated - I just clicked the "retry" button and it went through successfully

This worked for me. Download http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4657, install and click retry on "don't have permissions" errors, restart computer when prompted to do so. Sorry I don't speak ?Dutch?, I could have replied in afrikaans but english is probably better :-)

Thanks, yes it is Dutch, I tried but ...cannot find patches?

So this does not work for me.

Thanks again.

@regina33, vmareje :

I think you'll find the patches/updates here - http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=10&platform=Windows - I installed the "Adobe Reader 9.3.2 update - multiple languages" one. I think MUI stands for Multilingual User Interface - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd317706(v=VS.85).aspx. I seem to have the non-MUI version - most people probably have the non-MUI version - probably some indication of this in Adobe Reader's "Help about"

Another thing which I think should work for you:

1.Goto Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs>Change/Modify Acrobat or Reader and Repair your base(9.3.1).

2.Then apply patch manually from location :

To all of you who still have problems with the update: I would try to uninstall the Reader completely, if necessary with the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.  Next install the basic 9.3 Reader, followed by the updates

April 14, 2010

I get this error while trying to install an update to Acrobat 8.2 Standard.

The message says:  Run the Adobe repair utility,   error 1500.

This is happening to me as well on Vista x64.

First attempted to update from 9.3.1 to 9.3.2, got the 1500 error.

Launched Adobe Reader again and used the Repair function from the Help menu. Ran 9.3.2 update again, got the 1500 error.

I then uninstalled Adobe Reader entirely and installed 9.3.0 again. Ran 9.3.2 update again, got the 1500 error.

At this point, I think I'm just going to switch to Foxit Reader.

Denis,

In your case I would download 9.3.2 Patch directly from Adobe and try to install it without updater.

Of cause you need to have 9.3.0 Reader already installed on the system.

The URL is http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4657

Updater will display error 1500 if Windows Installer Service did not return SUCCESS back to updater.

One possible scenario is when original installation source required by Installer Service to apply Patch is missing.

There are many other possible reasons for Windows Installer Service to fail.

Hope it helps,

Thanks

I'm having the same issues with the 1500 error and Windows XP home.  I've tried the manual patching: but I get this error message and I'm forced to abort the patch.
