Can't select block of text

I have updated to Adobe Acrobat DC and can no longer select blocks of text in pdfs. I have the select tool active, I am trying to select a whole sentence to highlight. I am using a pdf in which I have previously been able to perform this function. I am trying to place the curser at beginning of sentence and drag to the end of the sentence to select whole sentence before I highlight it.  I can no longer do this WHY? It's driving me mad.

Hoping someone can help

It might be a scanned copy, Not all PDFs are created by following general norms, creating a PDF file from scratch, or converting an existing text document into PDF format. Sometimes, scanned images are bundled and merged into a PDF file. Such a file can be described as a scanned PDF. They differ from standard PDFs in that editing them is usually not possible.

If so, use OCR to convert it into a regular file. Here's how:

    1. Visit PDF24 or a similar site that uses OCR to recognize the text in files.
    2. Click on the Choose files button.
    3. Upload the scanned PDF file.
    4. Allow the tool to complete its processing.
    5. Download the converted version of the PDF file.

This has worked for me whenever the provider of the original PDF wasn't aware of the difference between scanned PDF's and "regular" PDF copies.

Tried all of the suggestions in this thread.

Weiord thing is, I can copy and paste from the Table of Contents, but after that, get the blue cpature block.
Also, I can't search for key words in teh document beyond the Table of Contents.
Feel like giving up on gthis, but i can't, because I ahve to send the doc to customers

    Hi,

Have you been able to verify if there's a duplicate of a thumbnailed page.

Open the thumbnail viewer pane and scroll down to check for unnecessary thumbnailed pages that might've been automatically created when the original document was converted to PDF.

If you  spot a duplicate thumbnail of a page with the blue capture block  delete it.

OR, when you get a blue capture block , right-click on it and choose to send backward or delete it.

It would be better if you share a screenshot of what you see on your end, and also go to document properties and see what was the source document created with.

It is possible that the source PDF document could've been created with InDesign.

    Hi All

I had exactly the same problem but I believe I found a solution!

Windows 10 64-bit,  Adobe Reader DC

Problem: I suddenly discovered that could not use the cursor to drag cursor over text within a PDF either. This prevented me from, e.g., highlighting, selecting and inserting a digital signature (which is executed by drag command).

And yes:   Select tool ACTIVATED.  Copy text ALLOWED in document security settings.

For weeks I tried all kinds of things - reinstalling, repairing. What bugged me is that it DID work correctly at first on a brand new Windows 10 laptop. My other Windows 7 laptop was unaffected. I had to move to the other laptop to be able to perform the functions. Frustrating.

Today, however, I found an option here:

Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced) > Sandbox protections

    Enable Protected Mode at startup

UNCHECK this box, close Reader DC and reopen. Voila, drag function (and all its dependent commands) restored.

I hope it works for you, and that it works for all other users who have asked  a similar question on this forum, e.g. cannot select, cannot highlight, cannot copy text, cannot drag cursor, cannot insert digital signature, unable to digitally sign PDF

    Good luck

Well, that indeed seems to fix it. Security feature crippling functionality - not good, Adobe! I'd file it as a bug to be handled.

I found out that I cannot use protected view anyway, due to some nondescript compatibility issues (link to the explanation doesn't work)

So I figure I have to switch all these features off. Send me bugged PDFs now .

There must be another setting? I had the selection Tool capability last week and this week starting on Wednesday I do not. Adobe sure knows how to screw technical writers.

I also can't select blocks of text using the select tool in Reader. This is a new problem. The PDF was created from a Word document, so it wasn't scanned. What to do?

I believe it's the security settings of the document.  I can select text on many but others like Google I can't select any.  You will have to check the properties of the document

I too have had to give up on Adobe Acrobat DC after a frustrating session trying to select a block of text. I've switched to foxit.

The weird thing is that sometimes I can select blocks of text, but most times I can't. For example, I opened a pdf just now and was able to select a block of text with my mouse over 2-3 lines no problem after the pdf had been opened 10 minutes.. But I tried again a couple seconds later and suddenly it's gone back to being unable to select any text (by clicking and dragging the mouse cursor). No changes were made to any settings or options. No toobar icons were clicked. It just suddenly stopped working. I can select a word or a whole line by double-clicking, but that's no good for my needs.

I'm using a WIndows 10 PC. Never had this problem on WIndows 8 with earlier versions of Acrobat.

It's stopped again. Maybe it's something wrong with my hardware?

The "insert" key worked for me.  Thanks a lot.

No, it stopped again.  "insert' key is no longer working.

Solution:  install "Foxit pdf reader" ... unfortunately.

Note for old players!  Found out today that the insert key on my laptop had been deselected, selected it and problem solved. (Computers no longer have any indicators that insert is on or off).

Do I feel silly? A small amount.

Thank you to all who tried to solve my problem, much appreciated.

It was this simplest of solutions. Occam's Razor comes to mind.
