Slow opening/laggy scrolling in PDFs created by MATLAB

When i use Adobe to open PDFs created by MATLAB report generator it takes several seconds for a already shortened 50 pages document and even longer for the whole ~1500 pages document. The scrolling experience is also very unsatisfactory.

Other (even) larger PDFs not created by MATLAB, however, work just fine.

I already have an open support case with Mathworks, but maybe someone got some experience with that issue and can give me tips for setting certain options during the report generation or something like that.

(Images are stored as vector graphics, but I have a 9000 pages PDF from another company using these graphcs as well and Adobe's performance showing that PDF is satisfying.)

Interesting side fact: When i use a browser like Google Chrome or something similar to view the PDF the performance is much better than using Adobe.

I also tried to optimize the PDF  with Acrobat Pro but it crashes during the step "examining bookmarks".

Thanks for any help!

Kind regards,

Jürgen

Hi Jürgenr,

Apologies for the trouble caused, as stated above, the PDF's created by MATLAB are slow in opening and there is a lag in scrolling, also when trying to optimize the PDF application crashes, correct?

What application are you using to open the PDF? Is it Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat DC and what is the version? To check the version of the application please refer to the link - Identify the product and its version for Acrobat and Reader DC

Please check for any missing updates of the application. Go to Help > Check for updates. To know more about the latest version available please refer to the link  - DC Release Notes — Release Notes for Acrobat DC Products

What is the version of the operating system installed?

Is the file locally available on the system or is it on a network drive?

For testing purpose, disable the online storage in Acrobat/Reader Preferences from Edit (Windows), Adobe Reader / Adobe Acrobat DC (Mac) > Preferences > General > Uncheck show online storage when opening a file and when saving a file.

If it doesn't work, then disable the protected mode and Enhanced Security. Go to Edit (Windows), Adobe Reader / Adobe Acrobat DC (Mac) > Preferences > Enhanced Security > Turn OFF the Protected Mode and Uncheck Enhanced Security. Restart the application and check.

Note: Switching OFF the security is for the testing purpose only, please turn ON the security after testing, irrespective of the result.

As stated above you are experiencing lag in the scroll, do you have a touchscreen device? If yes, you may try the following steps:

  • Go to Edit (Windows), Adobe Reader / Adobe Acrobat DC (Mac) > Preferences > Page Display >Select Single Page Continuous under page layout.
  • Go to Edit (Windows), Adobe Reader / Adobe Acrobat DC (Mac) > Preferences > General > Select Auto-detect for Touch Mode and Scale for screen resolution.

You may also refer to the troubleshooting steps provided in the help articles for the crashing :

-Resolve Acrobat DC intermittent crashes on Windows https://helpx.adobe.com/in/acrobat/kb/acrobat-dc-crashes-on-windows-os.html

-Troubleshoot Mac OS 10.x system errors, freezes | Adobe software

If it's with the files created through Matlab, then would it be possible to share the file with us for testing purpose? Please share the file by private message only. How Do I Send  Private Message | Adobe Community

Let us know if that works for you.

Amal

Hello Amal,

thanks for your support!

"Apologies for the trouble caused, as stated above, the PDF's created by MATLAB are slow in opening and there is a lag in scrolling, also when trying to optimize the PDF application crashes, correct?"

Yes, this is correct.

This problem occurs on different systems with different Adobe versions.

for example:

Windows 10 version 1803 ; Adobe Acrobat Reader 2017 Version 2017.008.30051 (same issue after updating to the newest 2019)

Windows 7 Enterprise Service Pack 1 ; Adobe Acrobat Pro XI Version 11.0.3

The file is locally available.

I tried your suggestions but I am afraid they did not help to solve the issue, it seems to be a Adobe specific issue, all other viewers i tried worked fine.

No I am not using a touch device. It seems Adobe has trouble to handle the file in general. It also lags using the menu bar and changing the options. It often leads to the program not responding for several seconds.

Unfortunately, I am not allowed to share the file with you for confidential reasons.

In the meantime i got a response from Mathworks in which they say that their third party PDF renderer which is used to generate the PDF files appears to create SVG images in such a way that causes performance issues with Adobe Acrobat reader.

Apparently there will be a solution in their newest Matlab version 2019b. I am working on this right now.

Thanks,

Jürgen
