Black video on export Media Encoder

Contributor ,
Jun 19, 2023 Jun 19, 2023

Media Encoder was only exporting completely black video from premiere. The Audio was still in it. Updated everything so dont ask. The only way I got it to work was to browse for the sequence inside of media encoders self browser and lauch the export from there. Every other way possible didn't work. Support is useless and so is this program so hopefully this helps someone running into the same problem as me taking two hours to find out how to simply get this program to work even though youre paying for it.

The same thing is happening to me. I usually export nested sequences from a larger long form edit project with no problems. Now, it's all blank screens with audio.

That sounds like a DynamicLink issue. On what system are you? Which GPU? Do you have a reliable repro? Would you be able to share the project & files? I can PM you with the instructions in this forum.

Would a DynamickLink problem affect non-nested assets? I'm testing ME with a new project using a template my team has available. ME continues to export no video and only audio. There was also an issue with a previous export made by a different editor in a separate system. That export had a 7 min. blank video section as well. I don't think I can share project/files.

I seem to have found something interesting and a possible workaround. When I export via the Export page in Premiere (Command + M, File > Export > Media) and press Send to Media Encoder, I get the black video bug. If I use the Option + Shift + M shortcut (File > Export > Send to Adobe Media Encoder), Media Encoder has no issues exporting from my sequence that includes various nests. To reiterate, this is for Premiere 23.4.0 and Media Encoder 23.4. I have been unable to upgrade because of a font breaking in a Essential Graphics panel asset.

Interesting find! Thanks for letting us know. I will forward to the "Export Panel" guys.

I'm experiencing this too on build 23.6 (both in Premiere and AME). Working on a 2019 Mac Pro. A project shot on RED that needs both ProRes 422 HQ encodes and h.264 Vimeo quality 1080p encodes for each video I'm turning in. Some of them export fine but some deliverables randomly have no picture. And it changes which one every time. Sometimes it's an h.264 file and sometimes it's a ProRes HQ file that has no picture. And sometimes there's a color glitch randomly for a few seconds in them. But none of this is repeatable, I reset status & export again and it works correctly. Just very frustrating because I've never had to QC exports like this before from AME!

Thanks for all this great info, @rgonzalezhoms. I'm trying to get to the bottom of this.

I have a few more questions for you:

  • Is this happening 100% of the time and in the same place on the sequence(s) where you've experienced this?
  • Does it happen if you export directly from Premiere (press Export instead of send to Media Encoder). Not suggesting this as a workaround, just trying to get a handle on when this is and isn't happening.
  • You mentioned that this is happening on a new sequence from a template. Does that new sequence contain MOGRTs at all?
  • This is going to sound a bit strange, but bear with me here: Is the behavior any different if you use the menu command/keyboard shortcut (command-m) to get to Export Mode versus clicking on "Export" in the header bar to get there?

@David Heidelberger, answers below:

  • Is this happening 100% of the time and in the same place on the sequence(s) where you've experienced this?

-Yes. It's happening consistently when nested sequences are present. All elements in the main sequence, be it nested or not, do not export correctly.

  • Does it happen if you export directly from Premiere (press Export instead of send to Media Encoder). Not suggesting this as a workaround, just trying to get a handle on when this is and isn't happening.

-No. It's only when I send to ME from the Export panel.

  • You mentioned that this is happening on a new sequence from a template. Does that new sequence contain MOGRTs at all?

- We have .aegraphic assets we use in the projects. As far as I know we don't have any MOGRTs.

  • This is going to sound a bit strange, but bear with me here: Is the behavior any different if you use the menu command/keyboard shortcut (command-m) to get to Export Mode versus clicking on "Export" in the header bar to get there?

-I just tried getting to the export window via the File > Export > Media path and it is the same behavior.

Hope this info helps.

-Roberto
