After Effects Freezes after some time with error: "Direct2D Drawbot Error. HRESULT:-2005270523"

Community Beginner ,
Jun 17, 2024 Jun 17, 2024

I can't say for sure, but after two or three more recent versions of AE Beta I started to get a random error, after working for a few minutes the whole computer crashes and then this Direct2D Drawbot Error box. HRESULT:-2005270523 appears, but I can't close it, it keeps reopening endlessly and then I have to force close the program.

I've been using AE Beta since they redid the interface, it's just become another program! It's very fluid and enjoyable. I'm not using to use the retail version because he not received the interface update., but I can say that the problem is in the beta, because when i use the reail version there is no issue i don't have any errors or freezes.

Here's a picture of the error I get when I close.

Update in the Beta:
The new behavior will show an error stating that AE cannot continue, followed by a second dialog prompting to save the open project, a save dialog, and then the application will shutdown automatically. AE will no longer loop error messages in this scenario.

Workarounds:

  1. @WellsMcKenzie Run AE in Windows 8 compatibility mode This might be due to the disablement of DirectX 12 in Windows 8. Thanks WellsMcKenzie for posting that!
  2.  @Maxxxymiron found disabling GPU acceleration in wi

Same Error with this System, that used to run an 3090 Ti with 24 GB VRAM. I tried to switch the card to an Quadro 4000 RTX since the quadro card was having the issue on another system. My system that runs fine crashes with this Quadro card, so I assuem its the Quadro GPU.

The Other System that had the problem at first that runs with the 3090 Ti now just for testing and it has no problem so far:

Other PCs dont have any problem only the one with the Quadro card.

Today I switched to the newest AE Beta version and could work a little better, I had 3 times with AE normal the issues at one point when I tried to get into a composition. With the Beat it worked, but after switching to another Application from windows hovering to the taskbar it freezes and the issues appears again, but the error Message was more clear that the GPU has a problem.

AE Beta allowed me to save the ae file before it shutdown, but after that saving menu I received this from Nvidia:

So yeah, the only solution I found out is to buy a new Graphics Card. Chat GPT showed the GPUs that are most affect by and for me it looks like the Quadro and lower geforce cards are problematic, maybe not enoguh power?

Chat GPT result:

Here is an analysis of the GPUs reported in the forum that are affected by the "Direct2D Drawbot Error. HRESULT:-2005270523":

Affected NVIDIA GPUs:

  1. GTX 1660 Ti
  2. RTX 2060 Super
  3. RTX 2060
  4. RTX 2070 Super
  5. RTX 2080 Ti
  6. RTX 2080 Super
  7. RTX 2080
  8. RTX 3090 Ti (No issues after switching from Quadro 4000 RTX)
  9. RTX 4080 Super
  10. Quadro RTX 4000
  11. Quadro RTX 8000

Possible Correlations:

  • The RTX 20xx series appears to be the most affected (multiple reports of RTX 2060, 2070, 2080, and their Super/Ti variants).
  • NVIDIA Quadro GPUs also seem to be affected (Quadro RTX 4000, Quadro RTX 8000).
  • GTX 1660 Ti & 3090 Ti also mentioned, but the 3090 Ti appears stable after switching from a Quadro card.
  • RTX 30xx series is barely mentioned (except for a possible single case).
  • RTX 40xx series has only one report (RTX 4080 Super).

Additional Observations:

  • Windows 11 users seem more affected than Windows 10 users.
  • Some users report that downgrading to AE 2024 or older resolves the issue.
  • Many affected users are using NVIDIA Studio Drivers (versions 555.99, 566.14, 566.36, etc.).
  • The issue frequently occurs when switching between AE and other programs (e.g., browser, Premiere Pro, file explorer).
  • Running AE in Windows 8 compatibility mode has worked as a temporary fix for some users.

Conclusion:

  • RTX 20xx series and Quadro GPUs seem to be the most affected.
  • RTX 30xx & 40xx series are rarely mentioned.
  • GTX 1660 Ti is also affected.
  • Downgrading AE or using Windows 8 compatibility mode may help.
  • This could be a driver-related issue combined with AE's new Direct2D implementation.

If you're affected by this issue, are you using an RTX 20xx or a Quadro GPU?

@jitendra35274439ovdf unfortunately there is not much to do, then trying the "fixes" here that are mentioned.
Since Adobe is aware, hopefully it will get fixed or more Info about it how to solve it or avoid it can be shared.

I am encountering an issue while using Adobe After Effects. The error message displayed is as follows:

"Direct2D Drawbot Error. HRESULT: -2005270523"

This error is affecting my workflow, and I am unable to proceed with my project. I have attempted basic troubleshooting steps such as restarting the software and my system, updating my graphics drivers, and resetting preferences, but the issue persists.

Could you please assist me in resolving this issue at the earliest? Let me know if you need any additional information regarding my system specifications or project settings.

Looking forward to your support.

Best regards,
Jitendra Ghodgekar

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

After a lot of debugging, I found out that it happen with certain files only, which I believe is related to the codecs. MP4 - MPEG-4 are the most affected.

Setting to Windows 8 compatbility mode apparently fixed the issue. What also fixed it was to disable hardware decoding in AE, so I'm pretty sure there's something going on with the GPU when trying to decode some video files.

I'm running AE on Windows 11 with an RTX 2060 Super, by the way.

The error still continues, it only happens when I try to change the browser in min another monitor. It happens every 10 minutes, how is it possible that such a large company cannot identify the error, many days have passed and many users have reported this problem

So my Quadro 4000 is now out of this workstation and replaced by an TUF 4080 Super. So far so good, but dude how laggy is AE 25. Opening projects, saving, formobjects, GeoLayers cards. Its not funny. really pls make this more responsive. Since my system is more than good enough:

Supermicro M12SWA-TF
AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5965WX 24-Cores
RTX 4080 SUper 16 GB VRAM (TUF)
128 GB DDR 4 RAM

I've noticed it crashes a lot when those stupid little tool tips pop up. I keep turning the stupid little tool tips off in Preferences, but then it crashes and I have to reset my preferences which means those stupid little tool tips pop up again 😞

I recently upgraded my system from my 2080 Ti to a 4080 Super and upgraded back to Windows 11. The new GPU has fixed my crashing issues. On Windows 11, with the 2080 Ti, my system was crashing on both v24 and v25. On Windows 10 it wasn't crashing on either. My secondary system absolutely crashes if I try and edit in Pr/Ae now that it has the 2080 Ti, but it's not used for editing, so that's not really relevant for me now. Probably the most expensive fix, but there ya go, buy a new GPU for an exorbitant amount of money and solve all your Adobe problems.

Hi,

Got the same issue since a long time and never really understood why...

And looking at your post made me realise that I'm also using Animation Composer so I guess it should come from it or from AE dealing with thid-party plugins...

Not a big news with my message but I hope maybe it will help dev teams to find a fix 🙂

Have a good day all !

Still a thing. Even after updating BIOS, GBU-Nvid driver,, Adobe ... I was not even using AE when it happened. This is some OS-NVIDIA driver thing. @Adobe: you need a WAY MORE ROBUST  error handling solution. I have to click on the error field 'ok' for EVERY FRAME in the comp? seriously.?

MASSIVE work on the error handling infrastructure is necessary. CC has become cash cow the next disruptor is now despeately awaited.

Hi, just to add to the data you may or may not be collecting for this, I am also having the same issue, with the same error code: Direct2D Drawbot Error. HRESULT:-2005270523, ever since updating to AE ver 25.1.

My system:

Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super

Nvidia Driver Version: 572.16

64GB RAM

Intel Core i7-9700K CPU @ 3.60GHz 3.60 GHz

Windows 11.

Hope that helps and hope it gets fixed soon.

FYI, hoping this helps someone, Microsoft Windows 23H2 has known issues with the Direct2D framework. You may observe this if you use Firefox ESR to play back video with hardware decoding enabled. Update to 24H2 and the latest production grade GPU drivers and you should be all set. https://www.askvg.com/windows-11-22h2-2022-update-resolved-or-fixed-issues/#issue_you_might_receive_...

No, it's FINE. I LOVE to reboot my pc 10x every day. Especially when the AE material is stupid simple, after updating every possible bios WIN11 and driver, resetting the UI, purging everything 5x and working in safe mode (not like i was actually using any plugins). No problem!. And the most time is taken in figuring out what exactly to do. I don't mind doing it two or three or four times again because AE+AI crash the graphics driver, knocking out half of windows. Really! It's no problem that my project is two days behind schedule and my customers are pissed off. This is fine.

In the past, i have shied from AMD GPUs for fear of compatibility / driver issues. These days are now over.

Freedom is just another word for nothing else to lose.

Actually, i think i will be able to get by in the future without Adobe products. It will be a little work to transform,

But I am really looking forward to it.

Hello @edddim,

Appologies that you and others are having this issue. Have you had a chance to try any of the suggested work arounds in the pinned post?

This is still being actively investigated for further improvements on AEs side.

All the best,

@edddim I turned off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows 11. So far, I've gone 24 hours without any errors in AE. I’m not sure if this will help everyone, but it's something really simple to do. Go to System > Display > Graphics / Advanced graphics settings / Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
