After Effects 2022 crashing when opening preferences

I really hope someone can help my problem. I was changing my colour theme and labels, it was working fine before but then suddenly I got this pop-up messege problem thing (well sad I didn't took a screenshot of it because I accidentally click the "Don't ask" button.) whenever I open up preferences and any others options from it, it exits the app. I tried reseting my prefrences and follow other tutorials in yt, but none of them worked for me ;-;. Is there an another way to fix this problem? The video is right at the bottom.

Heyo sorry to hijack this thread but I have something simular based on title of "After Effects 2022 crashing when opening preferences" and I am all out of ideas. Wanted to take to a thread already in the works and didn't see on as close to my issue. I did not install a Windows Theme so don't think that's related so if you want me to make a new thread let me know.

Issue as noted in this same thread title:

When I click on Edit>Preferences and choose any menu, AE 23.0, 22.6, and 22.3 all freeze indefinately after 2+ minutes. I have to force close. I also have the green video issue with the H.264 codec from the following thread but I can't even try to do that fix until I have access to my Preferences again. That fix is related to turning off the "hardware accelerated decoding" and did work for my on my colleges at work. I would like to try to apply if/when I have access to my Preferences menus again: https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects-discussions/after-effects-2023-green-preview-with-h-264-files/td-p/13323345

My troubleshooting processes:

I tried deleting preferences in all versions. Restart my computer after each install. Edit>Purge>All Memory & Disk Cache... in all versions. Tried turning on/off and switching my audio source devices. I heard maybe that helps?  I have an Nvidia 3080Ti and installed and tested versions drivers 526.47, 526.86, and most recent release 526.98 which was noted to possibly fix the green video issue but, alas it did not. I tried reincoding one of the MP4 videos in HandBrake to see if that could help but no go.

If you have any other ideas to try, please let me know. I can work in the AE file but when I need to render, the videos will stay green. Thanks!

So good news! I fixed the issue. I tried a lot of options as noted above but, for me at least, what fixed it ultimately was updating my BIOS software. I have MSI MAG X570 TOMAHAWK WIFI from this page:
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-X570-TOMAHAWK-WIFI/support
Guess it had issues resolving communication with my GPU (EVGA Nvidia 3080Ti)?

I then was able to open the Preferences without crashing/freezing and could then do the fix for the green video issues from this thread as correct answer: https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects-discussions/imported-video-is-green-in-after-effects-2022/td-p/12607783

  • Disable the "Hardware Accelerated Composition, Layer, and, Footage Panels" in After Effects Preferences > Display.
  • Clear cache (go to Edit > Purge > All Memory & Disk Cache).
  • Restart After Effects and import the footage in a new project.

I also turned off hardware acceleration in the Import settings as noted a bit futher down:

Edit =>Preferences => Import => then in the dialog under video footage uncheck "Enable hardware accelerated decoding (requires restart)" then Edit => purge => All memory and disk cache, then restart AE without saving project.

Sometimes the green videos will come back in the project with said issue. But if I Edit>Purge>All Memory and Disk Cache..., it seems to resolve this issue again.
