Updated to After Effects 23.4 now crashes continuously. After launching AE and start working on a project for work it crashed within 5min and when trying to reopen I receive a message prompt:
"We detected a crash in your last session. Crashs can potentially be causes by faulty plugins or corrupt preferecnes. We recommend starting a Safe Mode session in ordfer to diagnose the problem. During Safe Mode session default prefeances are used and 3rd party effect plugins can be disabled."
I tried the following:
Any idea on what to do?
When you crash, are you getting a crash report dialog and are you sending that in? Is it connected to the email you use on these forums? I'm hoping I can look up the crash to let you know what's going on.

I'm having the same issue on export. How do we find the crash report? I sent the log in but I dont know who to contact about it

@goody bags Can you describe more of what your export looks like? What format are you exporting to? Is it to a local disk or a network drive? Does AE start exporting and crash or does it actually just hang and stop responding? I'm not sure it's the "same" issue as the original user as theirs is more about something happening after a certain time, not specifically during export.

Same here..
It freezes for a minute and then crashes.
I have the same message than Stefanf and I don't have a crash report dialog.

Same here with v 23.4. Clearing caches does not fix it and safe mode is useless. It crashes after a few minutes once I open the file. Sometimes it lets me work for 30 minutes or more but then crashes. I do not have any third-party plugins. I get the same message after trying to open AE again. No option for crash report.
My specs: AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 16-Core Processor , 32GB RAM, NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3070.
Curious what the issue could be !

Can you enable Logging from the Help Menu (Help -> Enable Logging), restart AE, and then once the crash happens, restart AE, go to Help -> Reveal Log Files, then find the After Effects Log.txt and post it back here. Perhaps that will help us figure out what is going on.

The crash dialogs not showing up is also somewhat confusing. If you're on Windows, could you go into the Registry (RegEdit.exe) and find the path shown in the image and make sure NeverAsk is set to 0. Just want to make sure that the crash reporter hasn't been turned off which would stop AE from sending the crash details in.

I checked NeverAsk is set to 0
I enabled logging, but also found some log files from when the crash happened (reveal logs): Link

Do you have a Wacom tablet installed on your machine? The crash is pointing at a Wacom driver causing AE to crash.

@mcnesta Your crash log appears to be NVIDIA drivers crashing. Are you able to upgrade to a newer driver to see if that resolves your issue?

@default10p7g5zsni1z - Can you try disconnecting your Wacom tablet and see if that helps with the situation? Looks like there is a 6.4.2 driver update as well.

Cross-posting from the Premiere Pro public forum:
We have verified a problem with Blackmagic Desktop Video version 10.9.11 (Feb 2018) on Windows, but it could happen with much newer versions of that software as well. It has been causing users of Pr, Ae and Me to crash on startup after updating to version 23.4.
IMPORTANT:
If you have an older version of Blackmagic Design Desktop Video software installed, you should remove it or update to 12.4.2.0 (Dec 2022) as soon as possible.

After updating my Wacom and NVIDIA drivers I have not had any more crashes, been able to work for multiple hours. I'll continue to monitor it but looks good so far.

Havnig the same issue, continually freezing after a few minutes of use in AE, then I need to force quit. I sent in a report, any help would be greatly appreciated. Using an M2 Max Macbook, running 23.5, no Wacom tablet in use.

@patricknaughter Thanks for sending in the report. A couple of things stand out...
* Are you using RED format footage? Does this hang occur on all projects, no projects, only with RED-based footage? It looks like AE may be waiting on a frame of RED-based footage but the importer is failing to read it and that is in turn causing AE to hang on rendering.
* It may also be that AE's multi-frame rendering is triggering the RED importer to get confused about which frame it is trying to read. You could try turning off MFR (Preferences -> Memory & Performance) and see if that helps.

The problem has been unique to projects using RED footage, disabling MFR seems to have solved the issue, thank you so much!
