So far I'm just crying at my desk out of frustration. I cant even do the tutorial in Ae. The tutorial is telling me I should be seeing some Logo or something in the Composition window but its just GREY. A giant light-gray box with absoluetly no information on it. I'm versed well enough in photoshop and I wanted to try my hand at Ae to branch out in my work and so far I hate this entire experience. Nothing I've found online has answered my questions and all the answers I were able to find were NOT helpful to a layman at this, telling me to click buttons that I dont even know the location of. I added an image to show what I'm seeing, and I have no clue how to fix it and at this point I'm ready to give up after 2 hours of trying to figure this out.
I'm on a Windows 10, with 64-bit processor and 8GB of RAM as per requirements for Ae. If there's just some simple button I need to click or a setting I need to change please just tell me, or just tell me I should give up on trying to learn a new skill.

I dont know why the first post isn't showing it, I added the image to the first post. Seems not even Adobe's website can work properly.

Layer 1 has effects applied, Layer 3, 4, and 5 are all children of layer 2. All layers in the screenshot appear to be solids and all but layer 1 have no effects applied.
Start by soloing the bottom layer and see what you can see. With that layer selected press the U key twice to see all modified properties.
The comp looks completely normal for a comp with nothing but solid layers in the timeline.

Hide the first top 4 layers and put the playhead(CTI) at the beginning of the timeline,
press spacebar , can you see anything in the comp window ? if that does not work out , please post the link of the source file

Hi
It seems your GPU might be the issue. I would defintely look at a newer model that supports METAL
The 6800 was launched in 2010 so is pretty old in terms of tech.
Try this and let us know if you get any display
1. Go to File->Project Settings
2. Change Video Rendering and Effects to Mercury Software Only
Please let us know if you see the comp populate

for me it looks like you have some GPU problem, you zoom out 25% and the gray color still fill the preview area, so mostly you have some problem see anything inside the viewport, any way to figure out this, try a new project and create a new composition and check if you still see this giant gray screen or you can see the normal viewport, anyway in all cases try to upgrade your GPU driver

Hi dmyler,
Sorry for your issue.
As OussK suggested, please check if it's the project that is built this way or it's happening in all the projects? I ran into a similar problem and it turned out to a GPU driver issue. Updating the Intel GPU driver solved it.
Let us know.
Thanks,
Nishu

I have also just had the same problem with AE, the who program seems to fire up but no preview window in the preview section. I tried loading a projact that I worked on last week, same. I uninstalled the latest verions and reinstalled the previous version, still no solution. I contacted Adeobe support and one of their support staff accessed my screen, and changed my display driver to a windows generic which made my 2 screen system a one screen system and the the connection was terminated with me and my coputer in safe mode. I went to the Radeon website and found a driver and restored my system to 2 screen. I also, on the advice of a friend, updated my windows 10 base program to the latest 2004 version (It takes about 2 hours) But there is no change, no preview image in AE and Premiere Pro doesn't fire up beryond the HITFILM plugin request. Any suggestions?

Hi SilliusMillius53,
Sorry for the frustrating experience. Would you mind sharing your system specifications (CPU, GPU, RAM) and version of the GPU driver installed? Also, Go to Help > Enable logging and try to recreate the issue. Once the issue has been reproduced, check if After Effects has generated any log files. Please share those files with us to investigate.
Looking forward to your response.
Thanks,
Nishu
