Followed tutorial for Particular wind effect, effect not showing up

Hello,

I followed this tutorial almost exactly. Except that I made the light a little later, but even when I started fresh and made it at the same time the tutorial does, the air particles are not showing up.

I've followed everything as best as I could and pretty much exactly but nothing is displaying.

The effects panel for particular shows fine and I am able to add and edit the effect, but I don't see any change. I had it over other After Effects layers but I have hidden those.

I don't see the effect taking place or happening like it is in the tutorial.

Any ideas?

Here is the tutorial: Wind simulation effect use Motion Path Particular in After Effects - YouTube

Thank you Rick. I'm newer to After Effects than Photoshop and Illustrator. I changed the light to point light, but the particles are still not showing.

Do you have any other ideas? Is there anything else I can show you?

If you just move light on a path, Properly name the light to Motion Path 1, then apply that to physics you should see particles swirling around the motion path like this:

I animated the motion path of the light layer that is selected, then opened up Particular, set the position of the emitter to be over the start of the motion path, opened up Physics and set the Motion Path to HQ 1. That is all that I did and the particles are moving down the path. This screenshot shows you every modified property in the composition. All you have to do is duplicate these settings.

I would start by selecting the Particular layer, pressing U twice to reveal everything you have modified in the timeline, then start resetting the modified properties for everything except those that are in my screenshot. If you don't see particles then there is something else going on in the project that I'm not seeing.

Again, if you just spend an hour or so with the basics and on the Red Giant site looking at well-written tutorials, you would have this problem solved. After Effects is thousands of times more complicated than Photoshop or Illustrator and I have never met anyone that has been successful using AE that just started poking around in the UI and looking at a few tutorials.

Thank you for your help.

That didn't even seem to make the particles show up.

Here is the file do you see anything I'm doing wrong? Thank you for your time and help. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1uQH-n1ZQrf7QO3XkoIafg3qd56z-v9W8

You can ignore the missing linked files. For now my main concern is the wind particles and why they aren't showing up.

Thank you

Here is the physics panel where I selected "1 HQ" as in the video and as the light is named Motion Path 1.

How do I change it to a point light from a spotlight?

Select the light, press AA to reveal the light properties and make the change.

Sounds like you should be spending some time on the Adobe tutorials site too. You can find a lot of good tutorials right here on the forum by just clicking on the Overview link in the top left corner of the Forum. You'll find this:

Thank you for your help. Here are screenshots of the timeline. Looks like the main property that is being changed is particles per second.

I'm trying out Red Giant/Particular right now. I'd love to purchase it. I might be more leaning towards doing so if I can achieve this effect and then I'll definitely learn it.

That makes sense that the particles wouldn't show at the first frame, here are some snaps further along the timeline with the particles not showing.

Thank you!

In order to help, I am using After Effects CC 2019 16.1.2 on a Mac with 16GM Ram, 3.5 GHz i7 processor, and Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 1536 MB for graphics.

First of all, that is a pretty crummy tutorial. There are no explanations and it's an inefficient workflow.

Without seeing a screenshot of your comp with the modified properties of the layers involved it's nearly impossible to see what you have left out. We also need a detailed workflow description noting where you start to go wrong.

In the future make sure you vet your trainers. Make sure they know what they are doing. The easiest way to find good tutorials is to look to the manufacturer first. For Particular, go to the RedGiant site.

Hello, sorry about that.

Thank you for replying. Hopefully you can help me out.

It isn't the best tutorial, but it is exactly the effect I was looking for. I am able to follow it completely but at the point where they show the particles first appearing right around 3:30-3:33.

I have set the motion path to my light, which is called Motion Path 1, but I don't see the particles when I scrub through the timeline. Other than this (being able to see the particles), I believe I have done all of the settings exactly the same except the color, which I want to keep white.

Here are some screenshots
