Roman Hanging Punctuation greyed out

I've got a paragraph in AE with some punctuation that i'd like to hang.

I found this option in the paragraph panel called "Roman Hanging Punctuation" and got all excited, but it's greyed out.

Am i missing something? Does this only work with certain typefaces? To test, I tried switching to several different typefaces to no avail.

I feel like there's probably an obvious step i'm missing here.

Any ideas?

Are there actually any special characters?

Yes. I'm trying to hang quotation marks.

What font?

I've tried dozens.

What text?

Should that even matter?

Did you paste it from somewhere else?

Yes. I used a TextEdit document that i made "Plain Text" (no formatting).

You know what though? Thank you for asking this last one because i went back and tried pasting and not pasting to see what would happen and ended up discovering that this only works if I create a text box.

If I just click and type with the type tool the option is greyed out. But if I click and drag to create a text box, and then enter (or paste) my text, the hanging punctuation option is available. Like i suspected, an obvious solution that i completely missed.

Thank you for your help, Mylenium. You got me part of the way there!

It will only work if your text is in a Paragraph Text Box (Type tool > drag rectangular area). If you just select the Type tool, then click the image and type some text, the "Roman hanging punctuation" selection will be greyed out (as it's a Point Text Box). Alternatively, you can convert your Point Text box to a Paragraph Text box as follows: Click on text box > Type > Convert to Paragraph Text.

Are there actually any special characters? What font? What text? Also, if you paste the text from elsewhere the source program may matter...
