Audition Multitrack Editing for 8-Channel Audio.

Guest

Hi -

I have a number of multi-channel files (8 tracks each) and I'd like to mix them in Audition's Multitrack mode.

Unfortunately, when I start a new Multitrack project, I only have options for mono, stereo, and 5.1 editing.

Is there a solution for this?

Thanks.

Those options are for the output format of your file, not the number of channels or tracks in it - you can add as many of those as you want. Go to Multitrack>Track, and you'll get options to add as many tracks as you need.

Thank you for the suggestion - I'm sorry if I was unclear -but I don't need additional tracks, I need to be able to edit multichannel audio files in their original 8-channels formats. I have an 8-channel speaker setup and I'm trying to design sound for it.

I'm afraid that's not possible in multitrack at present - the only output options are the ones you've already seen, which limit you to six channels. Opening eight-channel files in Multitrack works fine, but there are no options for processing them right through and outputting them in the same format at present.

Presently, the only way possible to do any editing at all of 8-channel files would be to do it in Waveform view. You can open them in it directly, append and cut them, and then save them in the same format without any real difficulty. The only thing you have to do that's important is to make one change to the save settings, as in this screen-grab:

Same as source.JPG

Where it says Channels, make sure this is set to 'same as source', and then you'll get edited files in the same format as the input files.

You could use Premiere.

Premiere has the ability to have any number of audio outputs and the ability to monitor them if your sound device allows.

Although not in the same league as Audition for audio treatment it will edit tracks just fine if you switch the timecode to audio samples to allow for  more accurate edits.

Here is an example sequence of 8 mono tracks to an 8 track master output, also showing the export (mixdown) panel.

Edit:

In the OPs case this is a setup with an 8 channel single track feeding an 8 track master.

Interesting. Audition would easily let you feed eight outputs to eight separate channels on a sound device that would support them - but only in multitrack view. Whilst you can do the basic edit in Waveform view, you'd only be able to monitor a pair of channels. On the face of it, it might indeed be easier to carry out this particular task in Premiere - which is a little bizarre!
