Audition not synching / jumping to correct part of file when opening Multitrack source file in Waveform Editor

Hello, I've searched online but this specific issue doesn't appear to be answered, so here goes:

With the Preferences > General > "Synchronize selection, zoom level, and playhead across files in the Waveform Editor" ticked, source files double-clicked in a Multitrack session should open up in the Waveform Editor with the playhead and / or in/out markers at the corresponding point/s.

In truth, this only happens sporadically, sometimes working but often not.

Preferences > Multitrack Clips > "Synchronize clips with the Waveform Editor" is not the answer - this just synchronizes Waveform & Multitrack according to shared timecode, e.g. double-clicking at 1 min 3 secs into the multitrack sequence opens up the Waveform Editor at 1 min 3 secs into the source file.

What I'm trying to do - and which sometimes works, but sometimes stops working - is open up the Waveform Editor at the same point within the source file which I've double-clicked it in the multitrack sequence. Useful for wanting to edit the source file at the point you've noticed extra noise to eliminate, or just to see what part of the file you've already used in the multitrack sequence, since Audition's metadata area's not displaying the source file's own inherent time (I'm aware not all types of files have native timeCODE stamps embedded into them, which Audition's metadata display may be restricted to, but I'm talking about seeing the simple count of how many mins & secs into a file a certain sound is).

An equivalent of video editing's "match frame" tool would provide the same function here.

I bumped in to this today.

What I found out:

- If I playback in multitrack mode, and then change to waveform, the marker is in the wished position.

- If I playbak in wavefor, and then change to multitrack, the marker does not follow. It stays where it was last time while playbaking in multitrack.

Multitrack is kind of a master and waveform a slave. Is there a way to undo this ? I wished the marker would follow either way.

No, you are stuck with that, because it would be perfectly possible to put the cursor in a part of the waveform that you haven't necessarily used in your session - so where does it go then? And that's the point; because it's not possible to define an absolute rule, you have to go with the default position - which is where the cursor was in the Multitrack session before you moved to Waveform view.

Hmmm....not the words you want to hear but I can't make it do this. I can zoom right into a single wave, double click in Multitrack, and the cursor stays put in the transition to waveform (and back to multitrack for that matter).

I'll have to wait and see if anyone else chimes in with a similar experience and maybe some words from the developers.

As a start, perhaps you could post the exact version of Audition you're using plus (although probably not needed) your computer and audio hardware type.

One completely wild guess that occurs to me--are your original sound clips the same sample rate and bit depth as your multitrack session. I know Audition throws in a conversion so the clips match the session but don't know if what you see in waveform is converted too.

Finally, just something to try as a workround: place your cursor where you need it, then select the tract from the adjustments panel at the left end (rather than clicking on the track itself) then select waveform from the shortcuts bar. This would at least rule out the problem being something to do with clicking on the track.

Also checked here. And, as Bob says, the play cursor position in the audio clip is maintained when double clicked to edit in the Waveform view.

Hi both, just to say thanks for this - it's still not working (even with the workaround you suggested Bob, but thanks anyway) but it's helpful to have heard back from others. These source clips are all the same sample rate as my session; I'm only using one clip which Audition had to convert the SR of, so that doesn't seem to be the problem. I'm on the latest version of Audition (10.0.2 I think) but updated after experiencing the problem, just in case that helped, so I've had the issue across both versions. I'm on a MacBook Pro, the annoying variety with headphone / line out only, running Yosemite, but just checked and have the same issue on a Mac Mini with dedicated line in & line out and running El Capitan. So bit of a mystery, but thanks anyway for the responses, both.

Hmmmm....well the only difference I can think of is that both ryclark and I use Windows. It would be helpful if another Mac user could test and see if the have the same problem. Hopefully somebody we be along!
