Audtion won't record - playhead jumping

I'm having a v annoying problem with audition. When I hit record the volume bar shows an inital spike, and then drops off. Nothing is recorded except from a vague crack at the start, and the playhead jumps ~1s at a time. It also seems like what is recorded is a LOT shorter than what I try to record (if I record 10s of me talking, for example, Audition turns that into 2s of audio)

I've tried different microphones (including my laptop default), all of which work on Audacity, but all have the same problem on Audition. I've tried in both waveform and multi-wave, but neither work. I've checked that the sample rate on preferences is the same as that of my microphone and it is. I'm stuck! Any advice/suggestions?

Can you show us a screen-grab of your Hardware settings page, please?

It was on MME before - I've managed to get it to record on WASPI but then it also seems to use the microphone as an output and I can't playback the audio without unplugging the mic (and the audio that it does record is all crackly anyway)

I think that the latency value is far too low, and having a buffer that small could easily result in the sort of behaviour you are experiencing. Try increasing it to about 250 and see how it behaves then...
