Extracting audio from *wtv files

I used to be able to extract audio from *.wtv files using Audition 1.5, but, following a computer crash and reinstallation of both win OS and Audition 1.5, can no longer do so. What am I missing? I've installed DirectX. Is there a codec I need to install? All assistance welcome!

What created those files? I can find no information about files with a .wtv extension.

It's an old Windows TV (video) format. It uses MPEG-2 compression, and audio using MPEG-1 Layer II encoding. It went out with the Ark, and there are only a limited number of programs that can open/decode it - for more information, see here. The chances are that Audition 1.5 opened them via a Windows codec, and that simply isn't there any more in the reinstalled OS.

Thanks for getting back to me so swiftly.
I'm sitting here on the Ark. Seem to be the only one left. There's no sign of life anywhere.
I used to use the MS Media Center to record radio shows. Importing the wtv files into Audition 1.5 (no other version would accept them) left me with a very clean wav file recorded at 48000 Hz. I cannot now remember how I stumbled on the correct codec that enabled this, but I'd dearly love to know which it was. Sadly, none of the searches I've made has produced a solution.
