I am using Audition 2017.0 and trying to do an edit-audio-to-video multi-track session. When I get to the step of pulling my reference .mov file into the editing panel I get this message: Adobe Audition has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly . Windows will close …..”
Any tips on chasing down the underlying problem?

The .mov format isn't a fully specced format--it's a wrapper that can take various types of MP4 video generally for use within Quicktime.
That's the solution--you need to install Quicktime or extended Quicktime on your computer. This Audition support pages gives you some details: Find supported import formats for Adobe Audition CC You have to scroll past the audio section to get to the video part.

A second possible option for you (and the one I use) is to install something like Wondershare Video Converter (not free but not too expensive) and convert the video into a preferred format before importing to Audition (or, for that matter, Premiere Pro).

Whilst everything Bob says is correct, there's still the underlying factor of what amounts to a crash that shouldn't have happened; a format refusal should be graceful!
When this happens, Audition produces an error log, and ideally you should send this to the developers. Information about how to do this is here: Audition Crashed. Now what?

Good point Steve. I meant to add that.
However, in my defence I've had various issues with .mov files in even non-Adobe programmes, sometimes including a freeze/crash.Seems to be something about certain flavours that sensible programmes don't like.

Hi guys,
Thank you both very much for responding. I forwarded your response to a local tech guy who has been trying to help me and he says that I have not given you all pertinent info -- so I asked him to compose a response for me -- to articulate the problem more concisely. I am an absolute newbie at this and don’t know the jargon very well (the project I am working on is part of a junior college class assignment in the digital media program). I am not even certain of how best to respond to this thread – whether here or on the adobe site, or if which even matters – but here goes:
“Thank you for your suggestions. I do have Quicktime installed and I tried converting the video into the .mp4 format - unfortunately the problem persists. Out of curiosity, I also tried a totally different video file, in the .m2ts format - and experienced the same thing. So it seems the problem is not specific to the .mov format, but rather to video files in general. I am able to drag .wav audio files onto the multi-track session without issue, but every video I've tried has caused Audition to crash.”
In the meantime I will try sending the error log info to the Adobe programmers as you suggest – thanks for that info also.
