After applying an echo effect, how do I adjust the duration the echo goes on for? I'm new to this software and your help will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

You can only adjust the parameters of a plugin after you've used it, in Multitrack view - just open up the effect and edit it there. If you apply an effect in Waveform view, that's a permanent print of it once you've saved it - there's no way to alter that at all. If you want more detailed information about what you need to alter, then you will have to tell us very specifically which effect it is, and what the settings are. Unless you did this in Waveform view - in which case you'll have to start over.

I should perhaps add that if you want to do this in Waveform view, then make a copy of your original file and work on that. The benefits of this approach should be obvious!

Just to add a detail to SteveG's answer, whichever way you go, the control you want to adjust is probably the one labelled "Delay" in the effect control panel.  However, as Steve says, in Multitrack view you can simply go back and adjust this before you mix things down--but in Waveform view (which is "destructive" editing) you have to work from the original clip or a copy thereof.

Just a final note on this issue, if the sound with the echo is the only sound at that point of the audio, then you COULD do a time-stretch on just the echo part of the waveform. However, the results from time stretching are very sound-specific and range from the nearly indetectable to the outright horrifying. But if it's your only option it never hurts to experiment on a copy. Strong emphasis on those last three words, from experience. Good luck!
