Incredibly frustrating problem. The Rode microphone I'd like to use works perfectly in the Microsoft in built voice recorder but not in Audition. Checked preferences etc but nothing works that I can see. Is this yet another argument between Adobe and another tech company?

No, it isn't any sort of argument at all. What we need here is plenty more information, otherwise we simply can't help you. What mic is it, and how is it connected to Audition? Is it via an ASIO driver or using MME? How does it register in Edit>Preferences>Audio Hardware? And are you trying to use it in Multitrack or Waveform view? If it's Multitrack then there are other steps you have to take before it will record on any given track anyway.

Hello and thank you for your quick reply. The microphone is a Rode Videomic Go - I use it as the mounted microphone for my Canon 90 DSLR camera. I've plugged it straight into the Omen hp laptop - Windows 10 (updated as per Microsoft recommendations). I don't know if it is MME or an ASIO connection. In preferences the following two options are shown under MME at Default Input: Microphone Array (Realtek (R) Audio) or Stereo Mix (Realtek(R) Audio). The option to "Use machine-specific device defaults" is checked. When I create a new Multi Track recording, no sound what so ever is registered by Audition - whether or not I change the Input through preferences.

Additional note: if I create a new recording but just an "Audio File..." Audition does recognise the microphone. But not in a new Multi Track recording.

Several things: If it's plugged straight into the laptop, then there's no way ASIO is involved! So MME it is. If it works in Waveform view and not in Multitrack, all that indicates is that you haven't set the Multitrack track you want to record on to use it as the correct input. Here are some clues:
and when you've done that and selected it, you have to do this:
Then to start recording, just hit the Record button on the transport controls at the bottom.

You probably need to check the Windows mic input settings if it doesn't work at all. Right-click on the Loudspeaker option at the bottom right hand corner of the screen, right-click on it and select Open Sound Settings. There you will find a number of options, including mic security settings - you need to make sure that all of the settings here are correct, and the correct input selected, before it will work.

Hello Steve,
Thank you for the information. Although in windows Rode Al-1 (my interface) is selceted for input and output as well as in Audition. In audition when I click on record nothing happens, not even the clock will start. When I unplug the Mic Rode NT1 and the Rode interface then select the laptop mic I can record just fine. In wave or multi. I shared screens with a tech from audition last night and he could not trouble shoot this issue.
Would you happen to have any experiance with this issue?

All I can tell you is that if the internal mic records, then you have a system setting that is in error - as I mentioned above. You can't just plug in an external mic and expect it to work - you have to change the input source, and check all of the settings in the Sound Settings panel. If you don't get this correct, then it definitely won't record from an external source.

Thank you. System setting in windows the external mic is selected as well as in audition.

Did you check the Microphone privacy settings? Make sure you scroll though all of it...

Thank you. Audition has access to the Microphone in privacy settings. In fact everything that needs it has access and works fine. I switched it off for a check and in auditon audio setting it shows Rodes is not operating. Switch it back on and they are there correctly, just won't record. Unplug Rode switch to laptop mic all is fine. No clue what is going on here.

To further the puzzle......I just tried the same system on the same laptop with Audacity everything works just fine. No issues.

Can you show us a screengrab of the Edit>Preferences>Audio Hardware settings?
Incidentally, make sure that the clock setting is set to Output - System audio. Having this wrong may well prevent anything from working correctly.

Not that surprising that it won't work - the input and output sample rates aren't the same. On the preference page, click on Settings>Recording, Select the Rode mic and click on Properties>Advanced and set the input to the same rate as the output - by the looks of it, 48k.

Thank you so much! Such a simple fix.
