Noisegate not working (autogate) to remove bg noise

I saw a great tutorial on Youtube about the Adobe Audition 2018 ability to remove the unwanted backround noise (or ac hiss hum) without affecting the actor's voice, however this new noisegate effect did not work. I tried it multiple times to remove the background ac hiss but the dialogue just starts cutting off , I have a Windows 10 with pro computer with no soundcard. The peak for the bg hiss is -32 so i set it to -30 and played with different values as well and changed things around but not working ? This would definitely be a needed effect because as simple as it sounds the traditional noise removal doesn't really do the job even after multiple passes without affecting the actor's voice.

Well quite frankly, you're asking a bit much to be able to get rid of background noise at -30dB without affecting speech, as generally the dynamic range of speech is a little greater than that - so any setting around there can't help but alter it. In the YT video it's a much cleaner recording in the first place, and the setting was at least 10dB lower than you want, so all it would affect was the non-talking bits, and it would leave the talking alone completely - which is exactly what happens, if you look at the activation light.

You have to bear in mind that it's a gate. It's either open or shut. And if you still have signal in the part you've shut out, then it will be removed. If you want results like the ones in the tutorial, you'll have to start with a quieter recording in the first place!

I would have thought that there are plenty of other ways to reduce your hiss in Audition. The Noise Reduction effect used properly should certainly help. However if you are able to post an uncompressed .wav clip out of your noisy audio file to Dropbox or Google Drive we can have a listen and perhaps advise on how to better reduce the hiss.

But as Steve says it would be much better to record without that background noise in the first place.
